Have Any Houseplants?

I’ve talked before about gardening outside but what about indoors? I love to have flowering plants around my house. Currently, I have two orchids an African violet and a Jasmine plant. I just got the orchids which flower in the winter but my African violet is about a year old and flowers in the summer. My Jasmine plant is about three years old and also flowers in the summer.

I love the smell of my jasmine. If you are fortunate enough to live in an area where you can plant them outside I’m so envious of you! In my area they are only used as houseplants. In late spring I do leave it outside for a few days to stimulate flowering. The smell of jasmine is like a natural air freshener only to be smelled at night. Its scent can fill up an entire room of my house! It takes me back to my childhood where we spent summers in Dominican Republic. Those plants can be found in any garden over there. I might just buy a small jasmine for my desk at work. I grow those plants pretty well.

On the other hand, I have killed so many African violets! I over water them and they get root rot. Thank goodness they are cheap. Every summer I buy a few just so they won’t survive! Last summer I finally found the secret. I guess I can share it with you Mami’s. J They like indirect bright light. I found the perfect spot in my kitchen. They also liked to be watered underneath instead of at the top like most plants. They don’t like agua (water) touching their leaves. And they also like to be a little dry in between waterings. That’s all I do and my plant is happy and growing! Just waiting for it to bloom! Are you a Mami with a green thumb? Please share! Which flowers/plants are you good at growing and which are you not so good?
