las_tontas_no_van_al_cielo_poster_1960-402x600 So last month I started watching the new telenovela on Univision called Las Tontas No Van al Cielo (translated: Idiots Don’t Go to Heaven). This telenovela is a bit different. Jacqueline Bracamontes stars as Candida along with Jaime Camil as Santiago a plastic surgeon and Valentino Lanus as Patricio along with others. But these are the protagonists.

So Jaqueline’s character Candida (aka Candy) found out on her wedding day that Patricio (the groom) cheated on her with Alicia (her sister). She was hurt and ran from DF to Guadalajara with her Uncle Memo (who I completely adore he’s so cute and plays a great gay man!) and faked her death. So Patricio the “widower” marries her sister Alicia. Her entire family thinks she’s dead. In the meantime Candy has made a life of her own in Guadalajara, had a baby (Patricio is the father) and started a great women’s group/business.

Fast forward and now Patricio and Alicia have moved to Guadalajara for business, Patricio finds out he’s a father but not of Candy’s son but of Candy’s girlfriend’s son! So their kids are half brothers and they don’t know it. Well the kids don’t but the moms do. Candy is really hurt by this because it proves that Patricio cheated on her with other women as well.

Patricio still hasn’t gotten over the memory of Candy and Santiago is also interested in Candy as well. He’s made that pretty clear even though he’s got a girlfriend which Candy is friends and is business partners with. She’s completely sworn off guys and Santiago is no exception. He actually proves the point she’s making about men.

This novela is a hide and seek game of Candy hoping not to get discovered by Patricio and Alicia that she is still alive (annulling the wedding between the two and making her still being married to Patricio) and Santiago chasing after her even though he’s got a girlfriend. He does have a sweet story though. He’s a single father, his wife left him and his daughter.

This novela is a little on the lighter side. Of course with jokester Jaime Camil as a main character you don’t expect anything less. He’s as cute as he is hilarious! Do you watch this novela? What do you think about it?

I love this novela, I have it on my DVR so that I don’t miss any episodes. It’s so fresh and funny and Jaime Camil is hilarious. Alot of the actors/actresses are from another novela that I loved called Ruby and it’s great to see them again

I DVR it too. It’s just way too cute. I liked Ruby too it was one of my faves. Who from Ruby is now in this show? I see Nicolas from La Fea Mas Bella. And also Jaime Camil and his secretary.

Candy is from Ruby, so is her the actress that plays her mom and the actor that plays her uncle in Las Tontas.

You are right! I had a brain fart lol! She is from Ruby. I don’t remember the uncle or the mom though. I’ve been meaning to get that on DVD. That was my favorite soap because the main girl was the bad one.

Hi Jojo! I think it’s too soon for them to have it on DVD. Here’s the official web site. http://www2.esmas.com/las-tontas-no-van-al-cielo/ How about getting someone to record it for you or DVR? I hope you don’t miss it but you can always catch my weekly recaps here! Thanks for stopping by!

I love Los Tontas!!! My husband started watching it first and now I love it to! I do not speak perfect spanish, do you know if the DVD will have subtitles?

  8. Jai says:

Hi Kristen. I’m not sure if the DVD will have subtitles. I don’t think it will be available on DVD until it ends here. It’s already ended in Mexico. But you sometimes can use the subtitles with your DVD player. Hope that helps!

I only started watching LTNVAC about a month ago and I LOVE it~ the storyline, the characters, the acting —and the added benefit of helping me improve my Spanish! It’s a great way “to study”!!! Since I didn’t start watching from the start, I could tell I wasn’t getting it all (not knowing the background etc. besides my Spanish learning curve)… I found the earlier capitulos at http://www.buscatv.net and I am trying to catch up rapidly as I continue to dvr during the week. …I’m totally addicted =)

But I do not understand something– I saw in wiki that the series was just for 6 months? and will end here in June? What is that about? I was sooooo surprised…it is such a great novela and I understand it was super popular…so why was it cancelled? Or is just a short run typical of telenovelas latinas? I was so upset to learn this… since it’s so great I was expecting it to be like American soaps that literally last for generations. Can you explain to me what’s going on?

    Thanks!

    Hi JoAnn,
I agree it’s very addicting and I’m glad you are using it to learn Spanish! It’s a very entertaining way to do so! As far as Spanish novelas go, yes they only run for a limited amount of time. Less than a year is what’s usually common. What happens is that the novela runs its course has it’s ending and another novela takes its place on that time slot. The actors all work for the network and not the individual show. So you’ll see the actors and actresses pop up again. I hear Candi is going to be starring in the next one opposite William Levy from my other novela and a hottie! It does keep it interesting and you can always sit one out and start the next one when it ends.

I hope I’ve answered your questions and thank you for stopping by!

OH! Okay. Thank you so much for explaining!! I did not have a clue…and now the other comments above make sense to me (about so many of these same people in the novela Ruby & such) Prior to understanding that LTNVAC has actually ended, I thought that perhaps these actors & actresses started off elsewhere but hit the big time with “season one” of Las Tontas and are all there “now” (not realizing that “now” had really ended.) How interesting… and working for the network and not the show… quite different! The other day I did recognize the actress who plays Soledad in Las Tontas in another program Familia de Diez or something like that & I just thought that must have been an earlier stint as she’s Soledad “now” (since American soap stars start off in one program and jump to another) Thank you for shedding light!

Yes, LTNVAC is a really, really fun way to learn! My listening comprehension has really improved as well as acquiring new vocab and I can get a fair amount of the humor too!! It’s FUN!!!! Especially when I find myself just getting it without paying such close attention!! But because I’m certainly not at 100% in my comprehension, I know that I could get a lot of use (and certainly enjoyment!) out of owning the dvds! Even just in the last month , the more my Spanish improves, the more I enjoy & appreciate the writing & acting!!

So…. usually telenovelas do become available for purchase???? I really do hope so because I look forward to experiencing the whole show without “working” to get it!! So where will it become available? On the official site? Or? Actually, it was while I was confused about what was going on… (I couldn’t believe it was cancelled so I though that just the “first season” ended or….) that I started searching about dvds to purchase for “season one” and that’s how I found your site!!
    Thank you again Jai !

No problem I am so glad I could help shed some light for you. I’m glad that watching novelas are helping you with comprehension. I always recommend that to people who are trying to learn Spanish. Telenovelas have been recently showing up for purchase. I don’t think LTNVAC will be available until after it ends. They like to keep the ending hush hush. But just for you I will write a post about the great telenovelas that are on DVD that you can purchase! I’m glad you found the site and I hope you keep stopping by!

    Hi Jai!!
Well, I’ve been looking to purchase Las Tontas No Van Al Cielo…but ?? Amazon has it in a set of 4 discs , but it says it’s 900 minutes run time. ?? Wiki has the series at 140 episodes at 60 minutes each —-of course that probably means 42-44min–but even so, there’s no way that 900 minutes covers the whole series. I clicked “enlarge this image” at Amazon and on the cover it says “4 discos mas de 15 horas” So there’s no way that’s the complete series right? Any insight on what’s going on? And if/where I can purchase the complete series???? Thank you for your time!!!
