Fumi Scarlett Purse Accessory Giveaway

This purse accessory is made by the makers of the purse hook. You know that handy little gadget that doubles as a bracelet so you keep your purse off the floor in public places? There’s a Spanish belief that states that if you put your purse on the floor you’ll lose your money. Let’s not forget the fact that the purse will get all yucky. I don’t know about you, but my purses are my favorite accessory and I’d like them to last me a while since I like to buy name brand.

Well anyway back to the giveaway! The Scarlett is a cute scarf you can accessorize your purse with by clipping it on the handle. This scarf does double duty. You can use it to wipe off your shades/glasses and phone screens. Check out the video below for more info.

Do you want one? I’ve got TWO to give away and they come in a handy little pouch! Here’s how to enter:

1. Become a Fan of Mami’s Time Out on Facebook!
2. Follow me on Twitter and tweet  "I just entered to win a Fumi Scarlett from #mamistimeout" (one tweet per day)
3. Subscribe to the feed

Mariah Carey’s New Single: Obsessed

July 31, 2009 by Jai

Part Latina Mariah is back with a great new single that I’m sure you’ve heard by now. It’s burning the airways at least on my side of town! People say it’s a jab at Eminem but she and Nick Cannon are saying that it was inspired by the movie "Mean Girls" where there’s a line that Lindsay Lohan says "I was like, why are you so obsessed with me?" Apparently she loves that movie. I love the song! Regardless if it’s a jab at Eminem or not, I’m sure we would love to dedicate this song to someone as some point in our lives. But of course, si somos toditas bellas! :) How can men not be obsessed with us! Enjoy! I do like that she also plays the guy that is obsessed with her.

My Open Letter to Huggies

Huggies Thick N Clean

Dear Huggies,

I am writing this letter because I am deeply upset at the fact that I can’t find my favorite wipes anywhere. Why would you pull such a great product! Those Huggies Thick & Clean wipes were the best thing since sliced bread. I’m telling you, as soon as a toddler starts eating more food and less formula and baby food the amount of wipes that is needed is insane. Maybe this is only in my house but the thick wipes really saved me (and my purse!).

Now I didn’t think much of it when my local Target store had it on clearance. I actually bought two of those three packs. But there is nothing close to that on the market I have tried everything from Pampers to other Huggies products and store brand wipes. They don’t even compare. These wipes really came in handy especially when my son has his famous "blowouts". Instead of using five wipes I end up using two or three at the most.

The fact that they are fragrance free are a huge plus for me. My son has inherited my allergies and I just don’t want to chance a reaction from using the wipe to clean his face or hands. Or bootie for that matter.

Now I have perused your website  and notice that the Thick and Clean wipes are still being showcased. Is it that Target doesn’t want to stock it anymore? Because I will go somewhere else to purchase. Yes, they are that damn good!

Even though we are in the process of moving to Pull-Ups before the summer is over, I am still planning on using those Thick and Clean wipes. Please tell me that they have not been pulled and where I can find them. I am hoping that your merchandiser hasn’t dropped the ball on this one!

Hoping to see your product on the shelf soon,

-Jai

Our First Family Vacation!

Inspired by Lily’s post on taking your pets on vacation I wanted to write about taking toddlers on vacation. My hubby and I haven’t been on vacation since before our son Booba was born and now that he is two and a half we are very excited to go on a family road trip to the Jersey Shore and do some touristy things in NYC. Hubby and I are both from NYC but we actually live in western NY. I love to shop ( as you all know!) so I am very excited about that part. I love finding deals and of course I will share with you what I find.

Besides shopping, we are going to spend some time at the beach, hit up some zoos and aquariums, go to Central Park and chill with some family. We’re also hitting the boardwalk and amusement park at the Shore. The GPS is ready to go and I’m starting to get my list together of what we’ll need on our trip. Here’s my list so far…

  1. Stroller (wondering between the big one and the umbrella one. Going with the big one?) I also hear you can rent strollers
  2. A cooler for snacks and juice.
  3. The portable DVD player and some kid approved DVD’s. (Right now at my house that’s Madagascar, Finding Nemo, and anything with animals in it. He loves 101 Dalmatians & 102 Dalmatians and Toy Story are also a hit at our house.)
  4. Beach toys, beach towel and bathing suit for him.

Since we are new at this, I’m wondering….is there anything I should know? Is there something I’m missing that I should be taking along? Can’t wait to read your tips and I’ll be posting about my vacation when I get back.  I’ll be on vacay from 8/5-8/10. Wish me luck!

Puerto Rican Day Parade!

Today was the Puerto RIcan Day Festival and Parade in my area. It was a fun family time. The parade was representing every area of Puerto Rico with floats and music. There was lots of dancing in the streets and a lot of cultural pride. I am not Puerto Rican but my son and hubby are and I don’t see it much different than being Dominican. Both countries love great food and loud music! LOL. It was a great time and I am glad we got to enjoy the beautiful weather. It’s been raining here for quite some time now and I’m glad that summer is finally showing its face a bit! I hope you enjoy some of the pictures I took I even a great one of our mayor walking holding a flag and wearing a chacabana! Now that’s what I’m talking about!

A great Dominican Drink: Morir Soñando

July 24, 2009 by Jai

Ok so the name of the drink Morir Soñando sounds a little scary. It means Dreaming in Death or Dying in your sleep. And the thought of mixing milk and orange juice makes some people queasy. But trust me, this is one of my favorite drinks while vacationing in Dominican Republic. Also some places in NYC also make them. Use four cups of evaporated milk (Carnation Milk) two cups of orange juice half a cup of sugar and some ice if desired. This is enough for four people. Here’s a more specific recipe with picture. Try it you won’t regret it!

Did you try my recipe? Have you ever had a Morir Soñando? Where is the best restaurant located for Morir Soñandos? Share in the comments!

Another Great Dominican Drink: Lechosa

papaya

I absolutely love this papaya shake. It’s made similar to Morir Soñando with evaporated milk. You add papaya (aka Lechosa) and sugar. Here’s the recipe from Dominican Cooking. Now, I did want to add that you should try to get all the seeds out if you are going to buy a whole papaya or just get one that has already been peeled and cut to save some time. Enjoy this delicious Dominican drink!

An Alternative to Smoothies: Agua Frescas

tamarindo

An article I read the other day inspired this post. Agua Frescas (Fresh Water or Cold Water) is a lighter version of the smoothie. It is very popular in Mexico and you can take your favorite fruit with some syrup or sugar and cold water and make this drink. It’s not as heavy as a smoothie, think more like making lemonade. Mexicans like to use tamarindo (tamarinds) which are very sour but if you add the sugar to it you’ll be alright. I love to eat those because they are so sour. Once they get processed or put into a paste they lose that.

You can also purchase Agua Fresca already prepared and bottled. It sounds like a great summer drink and a great alternative to lemonade and smoothies! Buen Provecho!

This is one of three Latin inspired drinks to keep you cool this summer!

Celebrity Hair Makeover: Jessica Alba

So what do you think  Jessica Alba’s new hair? She borrowed a page from Lily and took the leap from brunette to blonde.  It’s not as bad (or as orange as) Christina Milian but I do think I prefer her brownish with the highlights. She still looks great but a bit washed out. Maybe some lowlights? What do you guys think about her nuevo look? She has been blonde before though. She’s been every shade in between medium golden brown to platinum blonde. I like the medium golden brown with highlights. I think it’s because that’s what I wanted to do to my hair. :)
