Here’s an email I received about protecting your identity this shopping season. Stay safe!
From shoes and jeans to computers and grills, many items will be on sale come Black Friday and Cyber Monday-don’t let your identity be one of them! The No. 1 crime in America, identity theft runs rampant during the holiday season.
An identity is stolen every three to four seconds. Yours will not be one of them if you follow these tips, courtesy of Scott Stevenson, Founder and CEO of Eliminate ID Theft, an identity theft protection and credit-monitoring agency.
Beware of Skimming – During the holidays, stores use temporary workers to accommodate the shoppers who crowd the malls. These workers often go through a much-less thorough screening process than full-time, salaried workers. Often paid hourly at a minimum wage, these workers can be lured by the promise of quick money that skimming credit card numbers offers.
- Know what a skimmer looks like. Google Images has plenty of pictures. Skimmers are small machines that look similar to other credit card technology, and thus can easily be overlooked even when used out in the open.
- When possible, use cash. That way, you won’t be a target of identity fraud.
Be on the Lookout – From an experienced thief to a proprietary teenager, anyone can steal a credit card number and use it to ruin your finances and credit.
- Watch to make sure no one copies down your card numbers. Shred all receipts, as many of these contain credit card expiration dates, as well as the last four digits of the card numbers.
Protect Your Information – The National Retail Federation estimated that nearly half of consumers would shop online in 2007; more than 61 million people would do so from work, potentially spreading their financial information on more than one computer.
- Erase all cookies. Make sure no one can sit down at your computer and access your information.
- Use a shredder. Destroy old credit card bills and opt out of unsolicited credit card offers (www.optoutprescreen.com <http://www.optoutprescreen.com/>). This reduces the chance of someone sifting through trash and discovering your personal financial numbers.
Think Before You Click! E-mails containing links to online stores often contain phishing software that records your personal information as you type. Find reputable online stores using a search engine, such as Google, and add these stores to your favorites so you don’t have to trust e-mail advertisements.
Look for the Lock, the padlock that is. This icon at the bottom of an Internet window, along with the "http" or "https" at the beginning of a Web site, denotes security. Other indications that a site is trustworthy include notations from TRUSTe, Verisign, The Better Business Bureau and McAffee Secure. Additionally, when a site has Extended Validation SSL (a higher level of security) the address bar turns green and the organization’s name is displayed to show that it’s been certified. You can also check to see if the company is Visa CISP (Cardholder Information Security Program) compliant.
Use Temporary Credit Card Numbers, provided upon customer request by many credit card companies, for online shopping. Even legitimate Web sites sometimes get hacked into; by using a temporary credit card number, you can avoid thieves racking up additional charges on your regular card.
Avoid Fakes. Some shopping sites that offer deep discounts really are too good to be true. These sites allow you to add items to your virtual shopping cart and enter your payment information upon check out, just like any reputable site, except the products never arrive-they never existed in the first place, and now the criminals have your money and your personal information! When possible, order through well-known sites like Amazon.com, eBay.com and Yahoo. Check to see if smaller sites have contact information that connects you to a live person, rather than just an online form. If a company skimps on contact information, it might be a sign to steer clear.
Shop in Private from your personal computer rather than one at work, a friend’s house, a hotel or the airport. You never know what cookies or hacking tools may accidentally be on public computers, and you don’t want your information stored where others can see it.
Product Review: Thermal Round Barrel Hair Brush
This product was sent by International Beauty Products for review. Mami’s Time Out has not been compensated in any way for this review. You can always count on an honest review from Mami’s Time Out.
This brush is a must-have for every curly haired chica that loves to blow dry their hair! At only $12.98, this brush helps reduce frizz. It’s round and aerated so air can flow right through the brush. The barrel is also ceramic which heats up with the blow dryer. It cuts the time down in half…literally! It’s very light weight and great to use but I did get burned once or twice when my finger slipped on the barrel. Nothing too crazy but it definitely heats up! It’s 2.25" around and dried my hair in about 20 minutes compared to the usual 40! Not only that, but my hair needed minimal shining product afterwards, it left it smooth and silky! The secret to a professional style is professional tools. This one is definitely one you need to make it look like you just stepped out of the salon! You can find these and other brushes at a great price at Brush Love.

Product Review: Brushlab Mirror Brush Combo
This brush was sent to me for review by International Beauty Products. Mami’s Time Out has not been compensated for this review. You can always expect an honest review from Mami’s Time Out.
This brush is another great quality brush from brush love. It’s a hot pink brush with a mirror in the back. I think this brush is pretty handy for touch ups during the day. It has the nylon ball-tipped bristles that you can use for styling or detangling. And at $9.98 it’s a great price! The only thing I wish it was a bit smaller. Unless you carry around a big bag, this is a not a travel sized brush. It would work fine in an overnight bag or a book bag though. Or for your teen daughter or niece in school it would be perfect. The color is cute and it will work in a locker or book bag. It would also be great for the office. Great gift for $9.98 and again you can include some sample sized hair products or lotion to make a cute gift set. You also get a free gift with every purchase at brush love so what’s not to love?
Product Review: Brushlab Ionic Hair Brush
This product was received by International Beauty Products for review by Mami’s Time Out. We have in no way been compensated for this review. You can always count on an honest review from Mami’s Time Out.
One of the things I hate most about winter (besides the snow) is how static-y my hair gets. I hate applying layer after layer of products because then my hair gets greasy. So when I got the opportunity to review this brush I was ecstatic! The little hairs that were standing up towards the top of my head are gone. You can also use this Ionic hair brush to detangle your hair if it’s dry. This brush is static resistant and creates negative ions for smoother, healthier hair. I’ve been using it twice a day: once in the morning before I use the straight iron, and again at night before putting my hair in a bun. My hair looks like normal again you can’t even tell I’ve battling static the past few weeks! If you want your own Ionic Hair Brush it’s only $8.98 at the Brush Love website. This would be great with your favorite product samples for that special someone who loves beauty and hair products in your life!
Also, Brush Love has a new survey where five lucky winners can get a free ING digital hair Iron ($159.99 retail value). I have one and it’s lovely! Fill out the survey for a chance to win!
The Perfect Holiday Drink: Coquito

Directions
- Blend all ingredients in a blender on high for 5 minutes.
-
Refrigerate.
-
Serve cold, sip and enjoy.
Product Review: Swiffer 360
This product was sent to me by MS&L for review. I have not received any kind of compensation for this review. Always count on an honest review by Mami’s Time Out.
I have always used a regular swiffer duster. I honestly didn’t even realize that it could work so much better if it was an all around duster instead of one side. I love the Swiffer because I have allergies and this really helps to lock in all the dust and household allergens that can accumulate. Especially when you turn on the heat for the first time. My vents get so dusty over the summer and it just seems like the dust is the first thing to blow out when I turn it on for the season.
I waited until I turned on my heat in order to try out this Swiffer 360. Mainly because the ceiling fan in my living room gets coated with dust. It’s so gross it looks like I never have dusted it! One Swiffer 360 worked to remove all the dust off my ceiling fan. Great part about it, no dust fell on my face. When using a regular duster, the dust falls on my face and my sneezing, runny nose and eyes soon follow. Needless to say it’s not my favorite chore. I had no sneezing or allergic reaction while cleaning the ceiling fan! Of course, I had to get up on the chair because the duster didn’t extend to cover a high area like the ceiling fan.
One thing I didn’t like was how hard it was to click on to the handle. Maybe it was just me but it did take me a while. I am used to the slide on motion of the regular Swiffer duster. It was also kind of difficult to remove the duster to throw it out. I felt like I was about to break it.
It’s very economically priced at $2.49 for one duster with handle, a starter kit is $4.59 for three dusters and one handle (best value in my opinion) and $8.59 for duster refills (6 in a box). If you already love and use the Swiffer but want a bit more…this Swiffer 360 may be for you. I may stick to the regular Swiffer for the ease of use. Have you tried the duster? Please share!

***Updated!*** Cheerios Books Giveaway!
Access to books is essential to reading development. However, did you know that over 80 percent of childcare centers serving low-income children lack age-appropriate books? And a recent study shows that the ratio of books per child in middle income neighborhoods is 13 to 1, while in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children.
The Cheerios family of cereals, First Book and Jon Scieszka, author of the popular "Trucktown" series and other children’s books, have joined together to deliver 100,000 books to community-based programs serving children in need – and they´d love your help! All you have to do is go online with your child and test your combined knowledge of children´s books by answering trivia questions related to "Trucktown" and other great children´s books.
For every trivia question answered correctly, you can cast one vote for the state you would like to receive books. The five states receiving the most votes will get 20,000 books each, for a total of 100,000 books. Visit www.FirstBook.org/Scieszka to test your knowledge and start voting.
Also, a lucky Mami’s Time Out reader can win a Cheerios gift pack filled with a box of Cheerios, a $25 gift card to Barnes and Noble and an assortment of books. One of the books I received was bilingual! To enter leave a comment as to why you think your state is in need of books. For extra entries, become a fan of Mami’s Time Out (check the sidebar), sign up for our feedburner (also in the sidebar!) or sign up for the forums. You can do all three for extra entries! This Contest will run through December 8, 2009. Suerte Chicas!
Cheerios provided Mami’s Time Out with the free product, information, and gift pack through MyBlogSparkTM.
ETA: Winner will be chosen using Random.org. Thanks again for participating!
