***Updated!*** Cheerios Books Giveaway!
Access to books is essential to reading development. However, did you know that over 80 percent of childcare centers serving low-income children lack age-appropriate books? And a recent study shows that the ratio of books per child in middle income neighborhoods is 13 to 1, while in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children.
The Cheerios family of cereals, First Book and Jon Scieszka, author of the popular "Trucktown" series and other children’s books, have joined together to deliver 100,000 books to community-based programs serving children in need – and they´d love your help! All you have to do is go online with your child and test your combined knowledge of children´s books by answering trivia questions related to "Trucktown" and other great children´s books.
For every trivia question answered correctly, you can cast one vote for the state you would like to receive books. The five states receiving the most votes will get 20,000 books each, for a total of 100,000 books. Visit www.FirstBook.org/Scieszka to test your knowledge and start voting.
Also, a lucky Mami’s Time Out reader can win a Cheerios gift pack filled with a box of Cheerios, a $25 gift card to Barnes and Noble and an assortment of books. One of the books I received was bilingual! To enter leave a comment as to why you think your state is in need of books. For extra entries, become a fan of Mami’s Time Out (check the sidebar), sign up for our feedburner (also in the sidebar!) or sign up for the forums. You can do all three for extra entries! This Contest will run through December 8, 2009. Suerte Chicas!

Our state has lost a lot of industrial jobs in the last few years (auto plants, steel mills, etc) and many school systems are having to drastically downsize. I’m sure our schools could really use them. Thanks.

Our state is near the bottom of the list for education, extra books could definitely help!

I live in Fl and we have some very impoverished areas but I think Hawaii needs them more.I have heard how they had to reduce their school week to save money. Thanks!

There are a lot of kids that need books. So many people are losing their jobs.

In Michigan, we are in desperate need of help. Unemployment very high because we are automotive related and very high school budget cuts.

I think a state can never have enough books so not just my state of CT needs more books, all states need more books! Each book is unique and different in it’s own way.

We could use books because there are schools that do not have enough

I don’t like to talk about our state but if you look at where our state stands in educational rankings you will see the need for reading and other tools to educate our young children at a young age.

My state needs these books because it remains one of the states with the highest rates of illiteracy.

Iowa could use more books. The school budgets have been cut. We have a lot of rural familes that don’t have extra money. Thanks!

West Virginia needs those books because of illiteracy rates. If we can motivate children to learn to read and keep reading West Virginia will have a better future.

Our state (MN) needs the books because we used to have a really high standard of education, but it has really fallen off.

Florida is huge, and while you might think of Disney World and South Beach, this state has a large population of very poor people. I live in Escambia County, which is has one of the highest poverty rates in Florida. Add to that, a lot of people lost what little they did have in the hurricanes or at the very least, they had to spend any “discretionary” income on hurricane supplies and insurance. It would be amazing to see thousands of children receive new books that they can call their own.

My state is desperately in need of books. I live in FL and out school system is really bad. My friends that are teachers tell me the stories of children who cannot read. It is really sad and I wish more parents/ teachers could tutor children and read to them everyday.

I live in NY, land of taxes. We have a budget deficit, so they are cutting funds to schools & librariesm and adding taxes and fees anywhere they can.
So, NY needs all the help it can get so the kids don’t lose out when it comes to library books,
