As a mom of two boys myself, I am definitely concerned with the lack of interest my oldest is showing in reading and just learning in general. When I had the chance to review this book Jump Starting Boys. Helping your recluctant learner find success in school and life, I jumped at it. My oldest is going to be in first grade in a few weeks. The reluctance to read or write is truly frustrating for me. This book couldn’t have come at a better time. I definitely want him to succeed in school and this book was eye opening for me. It explained how girls were outperforming boys at an alarming rate. How 4th grade is the determining factor on how your child will succeed in school.
This book helps you:
- Determine your son’s reading style to better help them learn.
- Strengthen his memory
- Encourage him to appreciate math and science
- Engage him via book clubs (I’m so looking into this one as I feel that we can bond over my love of books.)
- Limit his screen time without coming across as a tyrant (this one is huge at my house)
This book also talks about the importance of a male role model in reading. Me being the biggest reader is not enough. He’s got to see his dad or another important male in his life reading as well. This was eye opening for me as well.
I’m going to use this book as a reference, and constantly reference it throughout this school year to help him become a better reader. Just like the book said, reading opens all sorts of doors and can vastly improve his grades. It’s the foundation. Better grades equal higher learning and better paying jobs.
