Self-care is important for us moms to recharge. When you go on and on burning your candle on both ends, sooner or later you are going to crash. As moms, we tend to put ourselves last, but making sure we are first once in a while is not only not selfish, but also important so we can be better moms, caregivers, career women, and just all around bad asses!
I’m always struggling between going to bed right after the kids do or stay awake an extra half hour to read a book or binge watch one of my favorite shows. I know there are only 24 hours in a day for you to be able to get some self care in, but schedule it in your planner if you have to and remember that bosses don’t cancel! I’ve been working hard on planning, up to a three months at a time. I recommend planning ahead as much as possible so that you can be better at juggling everything that comes to your mind!
Here are some ideas for self-care:
Applying your favorite mask.
Multimasking is your friend. I love to apply a face mask on Saturday mornings while I do some deep cleaning. Deep cleaning my face while I deep clean my house. BOOM! Hair masks are good too, especially if you do it once a week, or biweekly. I like to go to bed with my hair mask on and wash out in the morning to style. Keeps my hair from getting too damaged.
Getting your nails done.
Especially if you type all day long, it’s great to look down and see a perfect manicure. My nails have been gross lately so I treated myself and paid for a manicure. Makes me feel a hundred percent better. A pedicure is always a good idea. The place I go to give you a massage with any mani pedi. Perfect.
Going to your favorite workout class.
No one ever regrets going to the gym. For me, it clears my mind and for that time period I’m not answering never ending questions from coworkers or kids. It’s perfect. I need to motivate myself to go back. Whether it’s cardio or weights, the gym is always a good idea. When in doubt, sweat it out!
Reading a book.
I can read anything from books on a subject I’d like to know more about (right now it’s parenting and blogging) or fiction books (I love murder mysteries and chick lit mostly) I can truly get lost in a book and it’s great to take your mind off the every day. Reading in bed for a half hour before going to sleep gets you ready for bed better than scrolling through Instagram or Pinterest.
Joining a book club.
If you love to read, joining a group of like minded people with the same love of books could be a great idea. If there’s wine involved, sounds even better! Who wants to start a monthly book club around these parts??
Learning something new.
I’m a life long learner and there’s so many things that can be learned from crafts to a course on writing or art or makeup….whatever you’d like to know more about! There are so many cheap classes around either online or at stores like JoAnn Fabrics or Michaels. I’d love to take a sewing and/or knitting class this fall.
Dinner and/or drinks with friends.
It’s so important to have our friendships and take the time to develop them. Spending time with the girls is always good for the soul. Even if it’s a quick drink after work for happy hour, it’s kind of like the gym…you will not regret it.
Binge watch your favorite shows.
This is truly the only way I watch TV right now, usually on Hulu on my iPad. I haven’t been watching telenovelas right now but that’s next on the list to watch. I can’t bounce around shows especially if they are older shows, I tend to watch one from beginning to end and move on to the next. This summer I have been watching Law & Order SVU. 17 damn seasons but I’m almost there. I tend to watch TV the same way I read books, I can only do one at a time and read from beginning to end before going on to the next one. When I finish SVU then I can watch a telenovela again. It’s been so long since I’ve seen one, my last one was Pasion y Poder. Hulu’s got the new and old telenovelas so it’s just a matter of finding the right one. Watching a telenovela definitely counts as self-care. Especially if there’s wine included.
Stroll through your favorite store.
A little window shopping can help clear your head. I never turn down a trip to Target, TJ Maxx or Home Goods. Again, sometimes I do this while on my lunch break at work. Even if you don’t buy anything, you can always get decorating ideas for a room in your home, etc. Even if decorating is not in the plan right now, you can plan for it later and try to figure out the budget and style you’re looking for.
Whether you’re a new mom or a “been there done that” mom, self-care is definitely important so you can be the best mom you can be.
What else would you add to this list?
