GBL Summer 2014 CoverWho doesn’t love Rita Moreno? I still watch West Side Story to this day. She paved the way for Latinas that weren’t really on the big screen back then. Some (like Rita Hayworth) had to change their names in order to sound less Latina?! Don’t believe me? Google it! ;)

Rita Moreno reminisces in this month’s Glam Belleza Latina. Here’s a bit of the interview below.

Check out quotes from Rita’s interview below:

Rita on her career-making March 1954 Life cover…

“It was very Latina.”

Rita on her 1962 Oscar win for West Side Story (a Latina first!)…

“I was so astonished that I’d won!”

Rita on her early typecasting…

“I hated the dark makeup, being barefoot – all of it.”

Rita on her small but mighty role as a call girl in 1971’s Carnal Knowledge

It was a brilliantly written and dark scene but very hard to do.”

Rita on one of her favorite icons, Elizabeth Taylor…

“I had no [Latinas] to look up to back then. It’s crazy that I’m a role model now.”

Did you know that July is National Breastfeeding Month? I know it’s already mid July and I’m just now realizing it! Did you breastfeed or plan to breastfeed your baby? I couldn’t do it exclusively because both my boys were super greedy but I did try! That’s why I’m all about this shirt right now by Sili at My Mamihood. It’s super cute shirt and you’d be supporting Project Breastfeed. Sili will make a donations of the proceeds of the shirt to this great organization.

I still regret not being able to breastfeed as much as I wanted to with Pun*. Between my preeclampsia and the blood pressure problems I had afterwards I think it affected my supply. I wish I would have contacted Sili about that at the time and maybe I would have been able to go longer! He was just so hungry and I wasn’t giving him enough :(

Head on over to Sili’s blog to purchase your shirt and help pay it forward to Project Breastfeed! I know I’m going to. So many ways you can style that shirt!

*Pun is my last baby. Used to be called Little Face because he’s so tiny, he’s now Punisher just because he’s mean! ;)

I can be a very specific shopper. It’s both my blessing and my curse. It keeps me from overspending and limits those unnecessary purchases. But when you are looking for something specific, it can take weeks to find. Case in point. This wallet situation. I wanted a new wallet. My old wallet just wasn’t working for me anymore. It was a super cute Hello Kitty wallet I got for Mother’s Day last year, but it was too small for all the crap I needed to go in there. So I decided I wanted a Michael Kors wallet. But I refused to purchase it full price because really have you seen how much those things cost? No way. I’d spend it on a purse but not a wallet. So I hit eBay and must have bid on at least four or five wallets. I was outbid last minute. On all of them. ALL OF THEM. If you are a hardcore eBay shopper like I am, you probably know the feelings I felt after losing wallet after wallet over a few dollars. A. FEW. DOLLARS. I was so pissed. So a friend reminded me of Poshmark. And I love me some Poshmark. I found a Michael Kors wallet that was cute. It was $50 but I asked the seller if she could lower it to $40. She quickly responded said ok, I purchased my purse and all was well in the world. Until a week went by and my wallet didn’t ship. WTF. So I got my money back. And decided that maybe me and Michael Kors weren’t ready to meet just yet. I shop by designer and I thought, hey check out Betsey Johnson. She’s cute and quirky at the same time. So I did and found so many cute options. Got a big ol wallet for $20 and it’s super cute! Check it out. online shopping That necklace you see draped over my super huge clutch-like wallet is a hamsa made out of opal that I got from Etsy. I love it and it came from Israel! It took a little long to get here but it’s so worth it considering it’s such a different piece of jewelry. It catches the light differently depending on how it hits it and I love it! What have you purchased lately? Do you shop online as much as I do?

Kmart has the best clothing selection for boys hands down! It’s been a while since I have been to Kmart but I prefer shopping there since they have such a fun selection for boys clothing. If you are a Mami of boys like I am you know my struggle. It’s so hard to find anything cute for boys that is still cheap. I want my boys to be cute but they are always rolling around anyway so I refuse to spend too much money on name brand clothes. I had splurged once on a pair of jeans from Children’s Place and in a few weeks there was a hole in the knee. For some $30 jeans!! No way.

transformer flip flops

KMart sells the cutest clothes for boys of all ages and I got a few short sets for my toddler for $5 each!! I also got some cool transformer flip flops for my seven year old that light up for $10! Even when I go for other things I always stop at the kid’s clothes section since my kids don’t stop growing and they have the cutest things at the best prices.

joe boxer dress kmart

I also got for myself two summer dresses with a lace keyhole back. Very weekend friendly and for BOGO Free I jumped at it! Got one in all black and another in blue with teal lace. The length is also perfect for those days you don’t want to wear a maxi because it’s just like a sauna out there but I don’t wear shorts and I watch the length of the dress because again, mom of boys who roll around. I don’t want to potentially flash the neighbors as I run around with the kids.

like a sauna

What have you purchased at KMart lately? Do you have any favorite stores to shop for boys?

BTW: Although I have worked with Sears/KMart in the past, this is a non sponsored post….I just love sharing my fashion finds!!

The kids are done with school and I’m scrambling to figure how to keep mine busy. There is definitely some summer fun to be had! Summer is my favorite time and is where most of my memories of my childhood have stuck.

summer fun ideas, kids summer

I have a shared Pinterest Board filled of ideas for Kids Summer Activities that some great bloggers contribute to as well if you wanted to check that out for some inspiration on bringing some summer fun to your household. I want to do some kind of calendar for them-mostly my seven year old, so that I can keep him busy with reading and writing all summer long. The newly DIY’ed command center should be a great help for that since he has requested a Spelling Week and a Math Week with tests on Friday. Let’s cross our fingers for limited tears! We are just finishing up first grade and I want to make sure he stays on track! I also have my personalized planner that I love but I do need to be better about actually using it. I can add things to that on what to do for the day, the week and if I do this right it could be my summer bible of sorts, to continue blogging, getting in shape, getting the house in shape….. Of course we’re trying to get away for the summer at least one or two long weekends but it’s much harder to plan fun around the city.

I check out Rochester’s Kids Out and About for great ideas for summer fun. I’m lucky enough to live in a very family friendly city with lots of activities and ideas for the weekend. We went to the Fairport Canal Days and it was the perfect weekend for it. We hung around, looked at all the vendors, had fried dough and just made an afternoon of it.

What do you do for fun?

Before and After five minute makeup

It’s morning. It’s morning and I have to go to work. I also have to look somewhat presentable and fake a good night sleep since a toddler kicks me all night (who’s idea was it to co-sleep??) and because I hate mornings I get up at the very last minute so all I have is five minutes at most to look presentable and fake this elusive good nights sleep.

The kids are out of school and it’s become tougher for me to look put together in the mornings. Picture a toddler attached to my leg at the same time as fielding never ending questions from my seven year old. It just doesn’t give me the best bathroom time. In case you are in the same boat I figured let me share my tips on getting you a five minute makeup routine! Four steps and you’re out the door I promise!

5 minute makeup routine

It’s summer! So make it easy on yourself and lay off the foundation a bit and just do a tinted moisturizer or bb cream. You can just apply either or with your fingers and you have a nice smooth complexion with some SPF benefit!

Go for a bronzer/blush duo. I just got one at Target from Sonia Kashuk and it’s amazing. Swirl with your favorite blush brush and apply on your cheeks. To make it easier on yourself as to where to apply just make a “duck face” and apply right on the cheekbone (not the hollow part).

Finish off with some mascara. If you wear nothing else, mascara makes you feel instantly awake. I’m going to be reviewing lots of drugstores mascaras to let you know which ones are truly good and which you can save your money for!

I love the Maybelline Baby Lips and own a few. It’s a great lip balm with the added benefit of a bit of color to them. I love Pink Shock it gives you a great “just bit a popsicle” effortless shine to your lips.

Four steps, five minutes and you’ve got a natural looking face for summer! Now you have more time to keep those kids from eating you out of house and home while complaining that they’re bored!

Maxi Dresses are by far, my favorite summer uniform. It’s so simple to just throw one on and you instantly look effortlessly chic. And since I’m a mom, “effortlessly chic” to me means not having to shave my legs. Word. And I still avoid looking dumpy. It’s an all around win!

scandal-limitedHow exited am I right now!? Very excited to hear that my favorite TV show Scandal is having a clothing line and it’s coming to the Limited which you know, means that it’s affordable!! Excuse me while I SQUEE!!!!! I wrote a post not that long ago on how to get Olivia Pope’s style down from the show and I’m way too excited that they have decided to capitalize on the popularity of her outfits in this way. I mean really, I don’t think there has been another show that has done this in the history of shows. So you already know that your fall shopping is taken care of because come late September, you would be able to grab bags, coats and sharp suits that have been inspired by the show. It retails from $49-$248. Considering the classic looks of what Scandal’s Olivia Pope wears, I’m thinking it would be a good investment either way since her look is timeless! You’ve got 42 pieces to shop from!! Who’s shopping with me? By the looks of those sketches I need to get my fitness on so I can rock these clothes come fall!!

command center diy under $100

Once in a while the decorating bug hits me and I give myself a project to do in one section of the house. Right now I’m obsessing over the kitchen. Specifically the command center that I would like to put together in the kitchen. I’ve been talking about this forever and of course I get it together right when school is over. But they way I look at it, that just means I’ve got a head start for back to school in September! But since we are going to be working on school items this year it makes it a whole lot easier to be organized!

This is what my wall looked like before….it’s just begging to be converted into a command center.

command center DIY under $100

This is one of my Pinterest inspiriations or ‘Pinspirations’ if you will….(blame Pinterest, always blame Pinterest)

command center DIY under $100

This is what my wall looks like now! I can’t believe it myself. Here’s what I added.

command center DIY under $100

Wall hanging folders from Etsy.

Vinyl Family sign from Etsy.

Some plants and moved a frame from another spot in the house.

Small basket for incoming mail.

The bulletin board was already hanging in the kitchen but I repurposed it and cleaned it up a bit. I’m also currently looking for this fun artwork my son made that I’d like to frame and put on another wall in the kitchen. And I also want to grab this from Etsy to put on the wall the bulletin board used to be on. Since everyone is always asking “what’s for dinner?” And I’m all…

command center update

So maybe if I was in a pretty kitchen then I could see myself in there more…you know cooking and stuff. You think hubby would buy that? Because right now I want to do an entire overhaul to it so you will see little posts here and there trying to figure out what to do next. Actually I already know what I have to do next, but then hubby has to finish fixing the oven so I can start the second and third projects. It’s happening folks!

Let’s see how long this bug lasts this time! Because a broke decorator can only go so far you know? ;)

Are you doing any updates to your house? If you have a command center in your home I’d love to see how you use it!
