I like big purses and I can not lie. On a daily basis, I carry around what my friends have called overnight bags. In fact, my husband has bought me an actual overnight bag for Christmas thinking it was a purse. Once in a while though I need to switch to a smaller purse, especially when it’s girls night out. No one wants to give up their seat for my big bag! I had an opportunity to try Soul Carrier bags, I love their little pop of color, and have a Q&A with the founder of Soul Carrier, Jennifer Paige Boonlorn, to answer all those questions you ladies out there who may want to pursue entrepreneurship as well!

But first, the bag. It’s named Olivia (after her favorite TV Show Scandal….which is my favorite too!) and I adore the hot pink details. It’s also very structured bag and although it’s small I can fit quite a bit in it including my wallet, a mirror, lotion and a few different lippies. A girl’s got to have options right?

Soul Carrier

This bag would definitely be able to hold its own on GNO! For those that love big bags as much as I do you will love the other bags on Soul Carrier’s site. Same pops of color in a bigger tote great for everyday! Kelly Beth and Sarah Elizabeth are great on the go! I would throw magazines, my Kindle, probably would find some stray hot wheels from the kids in those. They would definitely hold up to my crazy life! And now here’s the Q&A!

What made you decide to start this business? Why this idea specifically?

I have my degree in Fashion Marketing & Design from Parsons The New School For Design and I was in NYC working in the fashion industry prior to moving home to Phoenix, Arizona five years ago. In 2009, I created a line of very Gossip Girl/Blair Waldorfheadbands and hair accessories that Henri Bendel picked up. I had a huge trunk show at Bendels and my designs were even in their 5th Ave Window. I remember walking past the 5th Ave window — days before I was supposed to fly home to meet my newborn niece Blake Emery (the clutch is named after her) – and thinking to myself “My New York fashion dreams are complete. I can move home and be satisfied with all I have accomplished in NYC.” That same summer I moved home, Barneys opened in Scottsdale and I was part of an art event called “The Mannequin Is Our Muse” that went on the week of Barneys grand opening. I collaborated with a friend, and the mannequin we created was covered in rugs made from recycled material. My friend, who is an architect and always pushing me creatively – said you should create handbags out of the recycled rag-rugs – and I did just that. And ever since then, it has been a journey of turning the handbags into a business and a brand. The LLC that I had created to sell the headbands was called “Jennifer Paige Designs, Headbands and Accessories For The Posh Prepster” — I realized that was no longer a fit for the handbags and thus I came up with the name “Soul Carrier”. I have always loved the word “soul” and my friend thought “carrier” would be a cool-simple name for a brand – but I knew it needed more and thus we put the two words together…This current collection is very different than the first collection made of rag-rugs — the current “Authentic Change” collection is inspired by the super modern Al Beadle condo I live in — sharp 90 degree angles everywhere and lots of “boxy shapes”.

How is it different for you working for yourself compared to working for others? Or rather, is it different for you?

You have to be extremely focused and dedicated to your greater vision. No one is around to tell you what to do, so in order for it to get done, you have to do it yourself. It is extremely rewarding, but also extremely daunting at times. The ladies at ChicExecs have been the biggest blessing, having them as a resource for advice is incredibly helpful. They are helping me push this entity to a level I could never have imagined, had I done it all on my own.

What is your least favorite and most favorite thing of running your own business?

My favorite thing is taking an idea and bringing it from vision to fruition – that is extremely rewarding.I also love working with my interns and the amazing production team I have in Leon, Mexico. I am surrounded by some incredible souls and it lights me up to see them giving their all to help bring my ideas, goals and greater vision to life. My heart swells with pride and joy seeing them all in action.

My least favorite thing is doing my taxes…I have an awesome accountant — but even organizing all my sales numbers and receipts can give me a headache at times ;-) Creativity, design and art are definitely more my cup of tea!

What advice would you give women entrepreneurs that would like to start their own business?

Stay true to your soul. Listen to your intuition. Tune out the white noise, criticism and judgement that the rest of the world will throw your way. Learn to listen to the “noise” without defensively reacting – take what is applicable but always filter it through the lens of your own soul, set aside whatever is not applicable for you or your business. Know your worth and value is NOT based on anyone else’s approval but your own.

You have be authentic to your OWN path and no one else’s. Read!!Read!!Read!!!  — some of my favorite business books are “#Girl Boss” by Sophia Amuroso*, “Think and Grow Rich For Women” by Sharon Lechter, “Three Feet From Gold” by Sharon Lechter and Greg Reid, “Outwitting The Devil” by Napoleon Hill and Sharon Lechter, “ReWork” by Jason Fried, “Thrive” by Arianna Huffington, “Conscious Capitalism” by the Wholefoods CEO, “Let My People Go Surfing” by the guy who started Padagonia, “Start With Why” by Simon Sinek”, everything by Brene Brown, Don Miguel and Marianne Williamson.

What do you know now that you wished you would have known prior to launching this business?

To not internalize criticism or judgement and to not take it personally. People will have strong opinions and judgements – but you have to stay true to your vision and goals — their comments and criticism can be frustrating and at times irritating – but let it drive you versus tear you down. People love to “comment/criticize” but unless they are in the arena, I just nod my head, see if there is any truth or something I can gain/learn, and then I get back to what my soul was telling me all along. When you are grounded and being authentic – your intuition and soul will not guide you wrong. Learn to listen to it at all times!

*I just finished reading this book and loved it! Wished it was a bit longer actually it was so well written!

This kid has made our family so complete. Although I cry and ask my husband for another baby since it went by way too fast and get shot down every single time. Never mind the fact that my tubes have been tied burned and everything else. A girl can dream can’t she?!

Turning two2

After all the issues we’ve had with having children (if you want to read my story grab the tissues and check it out here) I feel beyond blessed to have these two little ones in my life. Having a second little guy in the house made it even more special, just watching my two boys play and have that bond together makes me all sappy inside.

Then there’s this from the last post I just shared with you above

“I cherish the baby time, because like I’ve read somewhere, you will have a child for life but you only have a baby for a year. It’s so true.”

Can you quote yourself? Is that a thing? Well either way I said it and it still rings true for me now. It’s bittersweet how fast he’s growing right in front of my eyes and I can’t even remember those baby pictures I took or how small he was when I used to hold him while laying on the couch. Life happens whether you’re ready for it or not!

I love his little personality (well most of the time) he is very headstrong and opinionated. My oldest is very sweet and friendly and my youngest is the complete opposite. Don’t get me wrong he can be sweet when he wants but although he’s just learning to piece words together into sentences he can definitely make sure you understand his point! It’s exhausting but I know it’s something that would help him later on in life and hopefully he can rub off a bit on his big brother. I’m already afraid my oldest will eventually get his heart broken because he is too sweet!

So I guess I’m actually thanking this little boy for coming into my life and teaching me new things every day. I look at life differently after having him and I’m sure he’s going to make a great impact in every life he touches!

The video below is explains my feelings exactly and has bee one of my favorite songs lately. It’s an old song that was remade and it’s bilingual for those of us who don’t speak Spanish. And of course in Dominican style it’s bachata!

Oh, since the day I saw you I have been waiting for you
You know I will adore you
Till eternity Si quieres tú
(Be my, be my baby) Be my little baby
(My one and only baby)
Sabes que te amo (Be my, be my baby)
Be my baby now Oh, ohh, ohh, ohh, ohhhhhhh

Although he won’t be my baby for much longer, he will still be my baby! You moms know what I mean! And this song is so appropriate right? Just take a tissue and pass it on.

Diapers and baby clothes are great and definitely a necessity for the new addition but what about something fun for the mom? There are so many great ideas that could pamper mom and help her through those difficult first weeks. Here are some ideas that would be a great baby shower gift!

  • A maid service. Wouldn’t it be great to get a full hour of cleaning for a new mom? One less thing for her to think about!
  • A subscription to Amazon Mom. That saved me the first few weeks with baby. Especially when it’s winter, it’s just you and your baby and you need diapers! Mom brain is at it’s highest at the first few weeks, so getting a subscription for diapers and wipes with two day delivery is a lifesaver!
  • A diaper cake is always a good bet. It’s super cute and inexpensive. If you need a tutorial check this one out on Pinterest:

fun baby shower gifts

What would be a great pairing with a diaper cake or to put in a diaper cake but Dr Smith’s Diaper Rash Ointment? Although new moms would love it (and diaper duty dads as well!) since you don’t have to apply the ointment with your fingers, I think that moms of toddlers would love it too! My toddler doesn’t sit still and a diaper change has to go super fast. Dr Brown’s Rash Ointment helps me with that I just spray  like Pam on a casserole dish, change the diaper and done! It’s been a life saver.

How about a giveaway?!

Dr Smith’s is offering Mami’s Time Out readers a chance to win one of two prizes!

1st prize is a $100 gift card to Amazon (maybe you can try out Amazon Mom if you win!!) with a six month’s supply of Dr. Smith’s products

2nd prize is a 6 month supply of products.

This giveaway runs through Sunday, October 26, 2014. As always, suerte chicas*!

I have long hair so changing my hair at the salon can cost more than $200 to start. It’s ridic. My new hair color cost me $20. No joke. Let me share with you my new color:

DIY Fall Hair Color

I’ve been a shade of red since April I went to the salon paid the $200 to get my hair lightened and it wasn’t the color I expected it to be. Since that always happens to me I decided from now on I will do my own hair color. I was using a boxed red from Garnier Nutrisse Ultra Color Nourishing Color Crème, R3 Light Intense Auburn for months. This one here. And my hair looked like this:

Loading

But since it’s fall now I wanted to go a bit deeper. And lord help me as much as I complain about going light I totally adore my hair dark. But eff them grays  not about that life. So instead I made more of a burgundy red and I had to mix a purple to get it more violet. Yes you read that right!

Here’s what I used:

Ion Color Brilliance Brights Semi-Permanent Hair Color Purple Ion Color Brilliance Liquid Hair Color 41R-Medium Intense Red Ion Sensitive Scalp Developer 20 Volume 32 oz.

Just remember I was going darker instead of lighter so if your hair is dark you may have to lift it a bit before doing this. Color does not lift color. Just my small PSA.

I waited a few washes before taking a pic since it was so dark at first. I used a ratio of half a purple bottle to a full bottle of color. Again my hair is long so it took two bottles of color and two bottles of 4 ounce developer and one bottle of purple color.

Honestly I think next time I might use more purple because it’s not as violet as I’d like it to be. But I would have to bleach my roots to lift it a bit before adding the same mix of color again. What a PITA! But $20 vs $200? I will do the extra work!

Do you DIY dye?

Pitbull and Enrique Iglesias tourDisclosure: I participated in Influencer Activation on behalf of Mom Central for Cricket Wireless. I received a promotional item to thank me for participating.

Pitbull and Enrique Iglesias are out on tour right now sponsored by Cricket Wireless. Do you remember your first concert? The energy from the crowd and the artists on stage was electrifying! Now, concerts take it to the next level! Cricket Wireless are going to give you something to smile about if you are headed to the Pitbull and Enrique Iglesias concert. They are enhancing the fan experience by setting up some major items like:

A Cricket Stage. This is a 10 x 20 stage that you can find at selected tour stops. Fans can hop up on this stage and give their best pose to share on social media! Those photos will be entered into a sweepstakes where a winner and their 3 guests will get a trip to the Miami Latin Grammy Street Party. All I’m saying is, if you win…don’t forget about yours truly! Plus you get free ear buds courtesy of Cricket just for participating! Bonus!

There’s also going to be a backstage VIP area where you can meet and greet Pitbull or Enrique and take photos with them, a selfie station in the ladies room so you can snap selfies and post all over your social media! #WishYouWereHere I know I wish I was!

Not only can you win on the Cricket Stage, you have another chance to win a trip to the Pitbull and Enrique tour stop in Atlanta, meet Enrique in person and ask him all the questions your little heart desires!

Plus at high traffic spots in the tour venue, there will be holograms of Enrique and Pitbull you can take selfies with!

I’ve been to some concerts but nothing as fun as this! All the extras sound like a great time just don’t spend too much time doing all this, there’s also the actual concert to check out! They are both some great entertainers so you can’t miss that. I’d love to see Pitbull in concert, love his sense of fashion and catchy lyrics on great beats. Anyone going to the Pitbull and Enrique Iglesias tour this fall?

Disclaimer: Product sent to me for review. However all opinions are my own.

Nailtini sent me a pack of nail polish to try along with two empty bottles I can mix the nail polish with to create a whole new polish! It’s been a while since I’ve done a Mani Monday, so I wanted to share it with you today.

I tried my hand at a little mixology but the color wasn’t as different as I’d hoped. But when I layered that gold color on the cobalt blue it was a completely different color! Check it out. But don’t mind my nail polish skills. After all these years of doing my own nails I still don’t do a good job. I clean the cuticles up while in the shower. It’s sad.

ManiMonday 2

My nail ended up almost a duochrome color which was pretty sweet! It’s a great effect to do on all nails or on one. I loved the cobalt blue color on its own too. I wish it was a tad bit shinier though.

Mani Monday Nailtini

If you are into nail polish and subscritions in the mail then Nailtini’s Liquor Cabinet is for you. For $25, you get three limited edition nail polishes plus two empty bottles so you can be your own mixologist and mix up a new color. You can also shop for eyes and lips as well if you’re not a nail girl!

Part two of the fashion and beauty app series!

Screenshot 2014-09-27 16.42.09

For those of us still upset about Style Thief not having an option to search for shoes (Kate Bosworth needs to fix that) there’s an app for us! Stylect is all shoes all the time and it’s a Tinder type of app where it searches for shoes based on your likes and dislikes. It also will tell you when they go on sale!

The only drawback to this app is that it doesn’t have many low end selections. Not all of us can afford $700 sneakers Amirite?

Pros to this app is that you don’t have to create an account (if I have to remember one more password I’m going to have problems) and it will still save your selections. Super easy swipe left for nope or right for yes please! This feature is easy when you’re trying to browse and your hands are full of kids running around. One handing it for the win! You can also go online to check out shoes. I do like those Lily Pulitzers for summer but I don’t know about spending $178! At least it would let me know if it goes on sale!

Another free app for you to check out and get your shopping on! To download and for other information on Stylect, check it out here!

Do you have any fashion apps? Which one is your favorite?

Loreal Visible Blur

I received this L’Oreal Foundation to review and to be honest I was a bit afraid. I love their selection of colors to suit every skin tone, but the L’Oreal True Match Foundation has made me break out big time before so I was a little hesitant to try this. I actually stay away from drug store foundation due to the lack of selection or the fear of breakouts.

This baby right here though was amazing!! I actually wore it for a full week before I wrote this review. In the summer, I like to use a powder foundation to keep my oily skin from going out of control. In the winter, I tend to go to a liquid foundation or a bb cream. I hate heavy foundations but I also hate when the foundation wears away before I’m done for the day. Well L’oreal Paris Visible Lift Blur Foundation was the perfect medium coverage foundation and it does what it says, it blurred my imperfections to make my skin look great. The key though is that it did not make my skin look like it was caked up with makeup. I just don’t like to see my “face beat” on a normal every day basis.

I used a stippling brush (pictured above) to give it an airbrush finish. I chose the color Honey Beige and it was a perfect match. The first day I tried the foundation I went to work, went to the gym on lunch (of course I showered, taking care of not getting any on my face) and then came back to work. I took a picture when I came home after a super long day and the foundation stayed put!

Loreal Foundation

I love the natural look it gives me! I have quite a bit of redness to my skin and the L’oreal Paris Visible Lift Blur Foundation really evened my skin out. If you want to try this for yourself, you can get it at your local drugstore, or on Amazon online. Plus it’s eligible for Prime! $12.99 with free two day shipping? How can you say no to that!

I have a feeling this foundation is going to be with me for a while. Have you tried any of the L’oreal foundations? Which one is your favorite?

Fall is here! Let’s all rejoice by switching out our makeup routine and bringing something new to the vanity. In the past year I’ve finally shaken my fear of lipsticks, specifically anything that’s not on the nude spectrum. It’s been fun to play around with new colors and applying lipstick is sooooo much easier than working on a smokey eye.

Here are my 6 choices for the perfect fall lipstick!

6 Perfect Fall Lip Colors-MTO

Aren’t they pretty and just scream fall? I’ve got a few different brands and price points here so starting from the two lip stains:

First one is Neutrogena Moisturesmooth Color Stick in Rich Raisin. These color sticks are hydrating while still giving you great color.

Right behind that we have Wet n Wild Mega Slicks Balm Stain in 2am Wake Up Call. Did you notice in the disclaimer that I called myself a collector? I have so many lipsticks glosses and stains that unless it’s Limited Edition I’m not purchasing anymore. I absolutely love this color, it is a limited edition from Wet n Wild and I also grabbed a nail polish that was LE. Still not expensive at all for around $2. I love the moisturizing and color pay off of this one too. It’s definitely more grape than the Rich Raisin above but for $2 I love that you’re not committed, in case you want to try a new color. Did I mention it was Limited Edition?  You may want to grab you a piece, I couldn’t even find it on Amazon at this point but Lady and the Vamp is pretty close.

Behind from Left to Right we have:

MAC Satin Lipstick – Rebel : I just returned my empties using my Back to MAC program-in case you don’t know what that is, read this! This is a beauty blogger fave and for good reason. It’s not as dark as say heroine but versatile enough for day or night and even the office! Love this color it’s so pretty! Here’s another angle of it…

MILANI Color Statement Lipstick – Uptown Mauve: I’ve recently found Milani and this is the first lipstick I have purchased. One thing that made me shy away from lipstick was the smell and texture. This lipstick smells lovely and is creamy! I love it! And it’s a beautiful color that stays on through lunch!

Wet N Wild Lipstick Cherry Bomb #918D: Another beauty blogger fave, this dark rich red can really compete with the bigger brands. The color is beautiful, great consistency but I wish it was a little more creamy. It’s a bit drying but for something under $5, you really can’t complain too much.

Last but not least is

NYX Butter Lipstick in Hunk: This lipstick looks dark in the tube but once you apply it, it goes on medium coverage. It’s perfect for fall and a great berry tone! Here are swatches for you guys!

6 perfect fall lipsticks

Even in the swatches you can tell how matte Cherry Bomb is compared to the other lipsticks. 2am Call Time is more grape than the others, Cherry Bomb is matte and the darkest, Rebel and Uptown Mauve could be dupes if you don’t want to spend the $16 on lipstick.

For ease of purchase because I know you want to buy at least one, I have included all links to buy. But for those of you who like to see your makeup up close and personal before purchasing, you can find everything but MAC at your local drugstore or Ulta. MAC of course is sold exclusively at the MAC Counter or online.

Which of these six fall lipsticks were your favorite? Do you have any to add to the list?
