I guess it’s my turn for a Hair Disaster

I am so upset. After getting a great recommendation from a friend of mine to go to a hairdresser other than my own to get it done, I end up with disastrous results. I’ve been needing a change for years and I’ve been talking about it non stop. Since I actually had some “extra” money and have been on a beauty slump lately I decided to go ahead and get my hair done. My hair was dyed dark blue black last summer and I wanted to go either a light golden brown or a bright red. To do this I knew I needed to see a professional and I booked an appointment with my own hairdresser. This actually took a lot of coaxing on my part because she just didn’t want to do it.

After complaining to a good friend of mine about my hairdresser not wanting to do my hair and asking me to take a vacation day to get it done, she told me to go to her hairdresser. Her hair always looks cute and another friend went and got her hair done and came out beautifully. I just don’t get a break.

So after the first two bleaching processes my hair turned green. Which I thought may happen because it was a blue black. I kept my cool and hoped that she could get it done. After four hours and four bleach processes later, I decided to go with a red. There was no way I can get a light golden brown at this point. Well after a total of six hours later, I ended up with two noticeably different shades of red and a $400 bill! She didn’t tell me that she was going to charge me $85 for EACH bleaching process. WTF! I look at it when I get home and it looks absolutely horrible with some pieces of my hair still black!

She is a long time friend of the family of my friend’s so I call her to tell her about this. I couldn’t even tell hubby. I just told him she charged me $200 and he saw I was noticeably upset so he didn’t say much more. At this point I know it definitely has to be fixed and my long locks are going to have to be chopped off afterwards. It was just way too much hair dye. I definitely don’t want to dye my hair back to black because it’s a pain to get rid of it. I also definitely don’t want to go back to her and would like to go back to my hair dresser to fix it. But I don’t want to pay to get it done. I would like to ask her for my money  back at least half of it so that I can go somewhere else to fix it. Because at this point, I don’t want to have my hair done by her. And now my hair, that flows down to my waist, may just have to be chopped to my shoulders and layered out to get rid of all that hair.

What would you do to resolve this? Needless to say I’m severely depressed right now.

  1. Jai, I’m so sorry about your hair. It sucks when you do something different with your hair and you hate. I’m really picky about who I let touch my hair. Normally my MIL does my hair. And like you, my hair is black, and will not take any color. I’ve wanted to go a different color before, but my MIL would not do it. She said it would damage my hair to bleach it out and refused. After hearing your story, I’m glad she refused. She would instead just bleach out a portion for highlights and it looked great. Now last summer, I got my hair cut short, above my shoulders and it was down my back too. It was cute at first, then I didn’t like it anymore. I am glad to say my hair is growing back and past my shoulders now.

If I were you, I would go back to that hair dresser and ask for a portion of your money back. She may not reimburse you the cost of the materials, but anything else should be given back. This is coming from my MIL, who is a hairdresser. You have a right to get some of your money back. Maybe your old hairdresser can fix your hair without cutting it.

I’ve learned to embrace my dark hair. I no longer want to change the color. My black hair is beautiful…..and yours will be again too!

  2. Oh my goodness Jai. I’m really sorry you had to go thru that. That’s awful. I don’t think I would have gave her more than $100. if she didn’t tell you than you owe nothing more.

That is like robbery, if you ask me.

Since she’s a professional, she should have been upfront with you and told you it would take a few tries. She didn’t so that is her fault, not yours. I would def. complain and ask for my money back; at least half of it.

Oh no.. that is why I don’t trust anyone.

But don’t worry girl; it’s hair and it will grow back…..take this as a learning experience. You’ll be ok.

    Good luck!

  3. Thanks girls for the words of advice. I will give an update since she is fixing it for free tomorrow. It also inspired me to right a post on how to avoid a hair disaster. lol! Well, I will try to keep the length and I will show you guys a picture of the finished product tomorrow.

@Melanie: Loves the hair! What an amazing job!

  4. Wow mami that sounds horrible, I also had my hair blue black for the last three years and decided I wanted it like you brown. I feel your pain because I went through the same thing my hair is now brown but has red highlights and it looks good so I’m not complaining but I really just want it brown so I go back every couple of months to get dyed again. It’s a work in progress let me tell you and my hair is also down my back. She should do it for free and even give you at least half of the money back because one, your not happy and two she has to do it again.
Hopefully it turns out better this time.

  5. Oooh, I’m so sorry to hear what happened to you. Yikes!!
I just read your update, and am happy to hear she is going to fix it. Crossing my fingers, and sending “beautiful hair” and “money back” vibes your way.

  6. Tell the hairdresser that you’re not too happy about the haircut. Maybe she’ll try to make it up to you somehow. A lot of people are doing their hair at home these days, so I’m sure she’ll do as much as she can to placate you, not because we’re in a recession and she needs clients, but because she wants to value you as a customer, and who knows permanent customer.
