Book Review: The Complete Book of Baby Bargains
This book was sent by the publisher for an editorial review. Mami’s Time Out was not compensated in any way for its review.
Since my son is now three, I definitely wish I had this book, The Complete Book of Baby Bargains: 1,000+ Best Ways to Save Money Every Day when he was an infant. So much so, that I am giving away my copy to my cousin who’s baby shower I have been invited to. Along with a few other things, of course. But since she also ended up with a preemie, she’s got hospital bills on her mind and this book would be a big help for her in saving money.
This book is divided into parts, before the baby arrives (how to save money on maternity clothes), Feeding, Health and Hygiene, decorating the baby room, baby gear, and everything else you can think of. It’s nice to give the book a once over but also to keep as a resource when you need to purchase something.
There are some really good ideas such as “Sixteen ways to reuse glass baby food jars” and something as simple as tip #28: Bring your baby book to the hospital. The nurses can do your baby’s footprints and handprints in it when they do them for the birth certificate. This saves you time and the cost of buying an ink kit to do it yourself later. How genius is that! Yet I’ve never thought of it or my mami friends haven’t thought of it either.
The Complete Book of Baby Bargains: 1,000+ Best Ways to Save Money Every Day book is definitely a must have for new mami’s as well as the been there done that moms. There were just so many tips in this book that made me smack my forehead and say “duh!” but that I didn’t think of otherwise. This would be a nice addition to any baby shower gift you are planning on purchasing.
You can purchase The Complete Book of Baby Bargains: 1,000+ Best Ways to Save Money Every Day on Amazon for around $10.

Book Review: Dad’s Pregnant Too!
I am so last minute with this but this could be a great gift idea for those Dad to be’s this Father’s Day (which is tomorrow!!) or at any time for a Dad to be. Dad’s Pregnant Too is about expecting Mamis and Papis sharing advice and tips about being pregnant. This book honestly made me think about Dad to be in a new way. We maybe focus a lot on ourselves due to our changing bodies and habits (no caffeine!! How can I live!) and especially for me with a high risk pregnancy it was procedure after procedure and testing after testing. It’s all consuming that you don’t really take a second to stop to think about how Dad is feeling. This book is cute and funny including:
· A guide to the different types of expectant fathers, from the Do-It-All to the Me-Too, and the Getting Fat to the Two-For-the-Price-of-Two
· A rundown on how to spoil your pregnant partner, from massaging wherever she’ll let you touch to the babymoon and push presents
· How to navigate the baby superstore and limit your purchases to two car seats and a stroller that should go 55 mph, given the price tag
· And everything in between, from the baby’s development to the body and mind of a pregnant woman to sex during pregnancy!
Here’s an excerpt from the book:
Tip #15
The In-Awe Expectant Father: Words Can’t Describe It (But I’ll Try)
THE TIP:
It’s a feeling like nothing you’ve ever experienced before.
THE STORY:
Seeing the baby come out of my wife was surreal and mind-numbing. The image was too much for me to comprehend—it was sensory overload. It wasn’t until a few hours after the birth, when everyone had been taken care of, that I had a chance to hold my daughter. My wife was sleeping, and we were alone. That’s when the switch was flipped. It was a feeling I had never experienced before. I was awestruck by the pregnancy, by the birth, and by the delivery. But the love a father feels for his child blew me away. It’s a feeling that never goes away.
—Me, daughter 22 months, 21 weeks pregnant
We had a C-section, and I got to spend time with Jack before Emily did; it’s not how I wished it. He opened his eyes and he looked at me, and I said, “Hi Jack.” And he looked at me like he knew that was his name. It was the most magical moment.
—Jeff (son 9 months)
I thought of including a blank page for this tip because there are no words to describe the feeling of going through the expectant father experience. But a book with blank pages isn’t a good book. So, here’s my best attempt.
Being an expectant father will leave you in awe. It will excite, exhaust, intimidate, embarrass, intrigue, surprise, scare, shock, and delight you all at once. The adventure will stir untapped emotions. It will leave you feeling something you’ve never felt or experienced before.
It’s as if there’s something programmed into our DNA that’s activated during this process. And when the switch is flipped and it happens, the world will change forever. It’s an emotional state so powerful and all-consuming that there are no words for it.
Don’t worry about not feeling it right away. It will happen, but when it happens will vary. It could be immediately after the birth, or an hour, a day, a week, or a few months later—but it will happen. It’s not something you need to force. No matter the heaviness or happiness of the moments leading up to the birth, it will all be worth it. The adrenaline rush of fatherhood is better than any drug—once the initial surge
It’s like a Darwinian switch flipped in my brain. I went from reluctant father to head-over-heels committed dad in a heartbeat.
—Eric (daughter 15 months)
I was in awe when I saw the ultrasound of our baby and the heartbeat—that is when I knew it was for real.
—Kevin (18 weeks pregnant)
subsides, the feeling lingers forever. It’s what bonds us to the baby.
From conception to coming home, the whole journey is exhilarating, exhausting, and awe-inspiring. It’s something you’ll probably want to do again and again. And while you might in fact do it again and again, savor the first time—the first is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Enjoy the adventure ahead.
THE BOTTOM LINE:
You won’t believe what you see, hear, and feel.
Dad’s Pregnant Too is a great read for any dad to be! This is the season for baby showers (I have at least two!) and would be a great gift for the Dad to be so he can feel included!
Book Review: Daisy Fuentes Unforgettable You
First I have to say I absolutely loved this book Unforgettable You: Master the Elements of Style, Spirituality, and True Beauty . I read it in one night. It was so full of great information and written like it was a friendly heart to heart that Daisy was having with someone she cared about. The message in this book was something you would expect from a Tía mamá, hermana y amiga. Someone who really cared about you and doesn’t want you to look like a hot mess while you are out in public.
She writes this book and adds some personal touches like family photos, a bit of biography (kind of like to say this why I know what I’m talking about) and just some great things to think about. There are lots of places for you to add notes, questions that you should answer to learn more about yourself, conversations she’s had about the topic of beauty, sex, spirituality and relationships with others. This is really a book you will keep coming back to and referencing.
She mixes quotes from famous people as well as some great sentences for you to finish such as what you know for sure about yourself, Every Woman should own… and Every woman should know… these are lists you make for yourself to improve on yourself. It’s a completely different way to think about things. The book talks about etiquette, being lady like and some great subjects that really work for the modern woman with a traditional twist.
Daisy Fuentes is one of those people that have passed the test of time, is a beautiful Latina who should be a role model to all our young girls. She’s been in the business for over 20 years, and has evolved from model and MTV VJ to business woman. (Don’t forget her clothing line at Kohl’s).
Just one thing….put those babies to bed first before reading this book because you are not going to want to be interrupted! To buy your own copy of Unforgettable You: Master the Elements of Style, Spirituality, and True Beauty check out Amazon.
This book inspired me to write my own lists. I will share a few Every Woman Should Know….
…..that crossing her legs is not an option whether in pants or a dress.
……what works for her and her body type.
…..that everyone is beautiful regardless of their size.
….that it is never too late (or you are never too old!) to try something new.
Have any good advice to add to my Every Woman Should Know list? Have you read this book? Share in the comments!
Hispanic Heritage Month!
Today, September 15th, marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. We celebrate our Herencia Hispana with music, food and lots of fun! I am planning to take my son to the local museum to celebrate. They are having a day of family fun with crafts, music and art. I try to keep the culture going all year with Puerto Rican Day Parades, I always cook my Spanish food at home and am teaching him how to speak Spanish. Right now he knows the numbers 1-10, the words "Stop" and "wait" and "Open your mouth" in Spanish. Dora and Diego are a huge help!
Before I became a mami I made a point to read a book by a Latin author during Hispanic Heritage Month. I forgot to mention B as in Beauty again that was such a good book! Here is a widget with some recommendations. You can find it on the sidebar.
So how do you celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? What other books would you add to this collection?
Must Read: B as in Beauty by Alberto Ferreras
I recently won this book B as in Beauty by Alberto Ferreras over at Hissip and it was on my "to read" list. Between school, work and being Mami and wife, it’s really hard to find time to read. Luckily I am a HUGE reader and I do read very quickly. Especially when the book is as entertaining as this one.
Without giving too much away this book is about a curvy Cubanita working in NYC who runs into a chance meeting with a woman. This woman helps her change her outlook not only on herself and her own self image but in life in general. It’s a must read, I just couldn’t put it down. I read it every chance I got. I should be doing homework and instead I’m finishing this book up. You can find it cheap on Amazon I will include the link to this post and you can also find it on the sidebar. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
“Latina Beauty” gets Mami’s Time Out Stamp of Approval!
I must say when I received my book I was surprised at the size. It’s a full size hardcover coffee table type of book. Yes m’ija it’s that big!
The book talks about beauty both inside and out and talks about the attitude that comes with being Latina. I do agree that the way we carry ourselves is what gives us that extra picante (spice or hotness if you prefer!) It gives you random Latina beauty trivia as well such as “Latinas are 40% more likely than non Hispanic women to apply lipstick 8 or more times a day”. That one was hysterical I think it sounds a little exaggerated but hey, aren’t we known for that as well?
This book also shows you step by step how to achieve your fave actriz’s looks. From the mas blanquita to la mas morenita it covers all you need to be your very best. It also has common Latin beauty myth busters and amazing pictures of your favorite actresses from La India to Jlo to Shakira to Tatiana Ali (yes she’s part Latina for those that didn’t know) and includes step by step instruction on how to complete the different looks from hair and makeup.
Speaking of hair, they give you some great hair tips for every type and texture they have tips on skincare from head to toe including how to give yourself a good mani or pedi (or how to find a good salon to do it for you). They also talk about body image.
The only downside to this book is that it doesn’t name specific products or brands. They do give you detailed info on what types of products work best for the type of look you are going for (matte vs frost vs crème lipstick vs gloss) but doesn’t name brand names as far as what they think has the best range of shades. On the flipside I do think that most of us by now have found the brand that we like that works the best for us.
Seriously, this book should have been called the “Latina Beauty Bible” This is definitely not a book you read once and put away on your shelf. You’re going to want to constantly reference it when you have a question or would like to update your look. I will whole heartedly recommend this book for all women of color that love the cultura Latina! I only paid less than $5 for it including shipping and I swear this book is priceless!!
I know you love Sephora!
Thanks for leaving such great comments about my [tag]Sephora[/tag] posts. I found another book and thought of you my readers, and wanted to mention it. It’s called Sephora: The ultimate Guide to Makeup, Skin and Hair from the Beauty Authority. That’s a pretty long title but at least you know exactly what it’s about! You can find it on hardcover and you can click on the picture for more details and how to buy! I will keep this one on my sidebar as well. Stay beautiful!
