New Hair Trend: Get 80’s Hair

Remember hair in the 80’s? Lost of teasing and hairspraying to acheive that big look. If you want the big volume without that over the top 80’s look here are some tips from celebrity hairstylist Philip Pelusi who is well knows for his Volumetric haircutting techinque.

teased

  • Use a volumizing conditioner and shampoo: Volumizing products are formulated not to weigh hair down. Be careful to apply conditioner only to ends.
  • Give Your Roots a Boost: Apply a root lifter bfore blowdrying, from midshaft to root (try Mod di Phy Define oof Lift Volumize Spray)
  • Blow dry for “oomph”: Lift sectioins of hair toward the sky as you blow-dry, driecting hot air toward your scalp.
  • Don’t blow-dry upside-down: To kep volume moderized, do not flip your head over.Back-Brush instead of tease: Instead of teasing your tresses iwth a comb, you se a flat-backed brush which will damage your hair less.
  • Mist Hairspray: Heavy hairspray is more likely to weigh hair down instead of give it volume. Sprit z hairspray in to the air and walk through it (try Mod di Phy Fluid Shaping and Finishing Spray)
I kind of like this look it’s still teased but in moderation.

How to Style Your Hair for a Hat

Hats are the must have accessory for the fall and winter months.
But it is not always so easy to look good in a hat–here is the secret it is all about the hair.
Celebrity hairstylist, Philip Pelusi reveals how to make your hair look great under the most common hat styles of the season.
fedora
Hat Style:
Fedora
Hair Style: Contrast the angles of the hat with loose feminine waves.
Why This Works: Loose feminine waves are a great way to wear your hair under a Fedora.  This type of hat has very sharp “menswear” angles.  This is off-set by the softer hairstyle.
How To Achieve This Look:  This type of hair style works best on medium to longer length hair.  If hair has a natural wave, simply apply a curl enhancing products like P2® by Philip Pelusi® ReCurl to boost waves and BeachComber to add texture and let hair dry or dry with a diffuser attachment on your blow dyer.  If hair is straight, use a big barrel curling iron to add curls, some facing towards and some facing away from the face.
Hat Style: Newsboy cap
Hair Style: Create ballerina-esque bun at the nape of the neck.
Why This Works: Wearing a ballerina-esque bun at the nape is perfect combination with this tomboyish type Newsboy cap look.  Also the Newsboy cap is supposed to be worn low on the forehead and this tends to cover most of the entire forehead.  Wearing a ballerina bun pulls the hair back off the face opening to face up.
How To Achieve This Look:   Part hair in the center and smooth hair back into a low ponytail at the middle of the nape.  Use a hair smoothing bore bristle brush and a hair smoothing product like Tela® Beauty Organics Composure.  Apply product to the ponytail also and brush smooth.  Twist ponytail in one direction and wind around ponytail and secure with a few hair pins.  Put on Newsboy and you are ready to go.
hat
Hat Style: Beret
Hair Style: Tuck the hair back into a side pony so that soft strands peek out.
Why This Works: A side swept ponytail is a perfect way to wear your hair under a Beret.  A Beret has a French romantic look and this feminine ponytail really compliments that.  Tuck the hair back into a side pony so that soft strands peek out.
How To Achieve This Look: This look works best with straight or smooth hair.  Create a side part and use a bore bristle paddle brush and a hair smoothing product like Tela® Beauty Organics Encore and brush into a low side ponytail at the nape on the opposite side of the part.  Secure ponytail and put on Beret.  The back of the Beret should slouch to the opposite side of the ponytail.
Hat Style: Shearling hat
Hair Style: Pull the hair half-way back, then unclip when the hat comes off to get the hair’s bounce back.
Why This Works: Shearling hats are beautiful and warm but they often crush the hair.  A hair half-way up look is a great idea to make the hair look great while the hat is on and preserve the hair for when the hat comes off.
How To Achieve This Look: Style hair as usual and then apply a product that can act as a dry hair setting lotion like P2® by Philip Pelusi® Increase. Then divide hair in half from ear to ear and twist up the crown of the head and secure with a clip.  This will work as a dry set.  Once you take the hat off and remove clip, toss to separate hair and revive hair with a hair refreshing product like as P2® by Philip Pelusi® RefresHair®.

New Hairstyle Trend: Side Bun

052908_carrie03_400x400 I’ve never been a fan of the regular bun. It looks very harsh and librarian-ish. But the new side bun is perfect and it’s cute for everyday or  special occasion. I prefer side parts in my hair anyway but you really don’t need a side part. you can part it or not, leave bangs out like this picture of Sarah Jessica Parker. You can put your bangs on one side and bun on the other. Or you can put the bun and bangs on the same side. Whatever works for you! Just make sure you smooth it out with your favorite gel or hairspray. Of course you also need bobby pins and you’re good to go! These Hollywood Bobby Pins Black 60pk. are only 80 cents on Amazon! To make bobby pins disappear in your hair, make sure you get some in the same shade as your hair.

Mami’s Tip: make sure your hair is close to the nape of your neck and only an inch or two off center. You don’t want the bun to hover close to your ears! Definitely not sexy! Also, if you’re one of those chicas that must have your hair down all the time you can try a half down half up look as well. There’s unlimited possibilities!

What do you think of this sexy easy look?

So I’m Back to Black…

With the risk of sounding like Amy Winehouse (Love the Back to Black album) I have to share that after my huge hair disaster I have gone back to black. I went from having long down to there dark locks to chopped and red. Then one day I looked in the mirror and realized my new color and cut looks like my mom’s signature color and cut. Not a good look for me. So I went right back to where I started! Here’s the timeline…

dark

This is the original hair with nothing done to it yet. Pretty huh? In hindsight I should have just left it alone! But you know how it is, you get bored and start messing with your hair. Then you get…

red

This was after I paid a professional to get a medium golden brown. After the hair disaster I ended up with two shades of red and no curls. I loved the non curl look but the red…not so much!

032

Then I gave up and just chopped it!!

Afterwards it grew in nice but the roots were getting to be too much and there was no way I could get that color again. And this is definitely a look my Mami has been rocking since I was a teenager. So….

latest

This is my latest look. I think I like my hair dark. Isn’t it funny how I just went full circle? Maybe this summer I’ll get some highlights. What do you think? Are you thinking of changing your look?

I just wanted to add that all these changes happened between April and October! I’ve been busy huh?

New Hairstyle: Very Sexy Bun/Twist

image001 I absolutely love this new hairstyle! It’s very sexy and taken from fashion week. Buns are the new trend and this is a sexy new way to do one! Want to try this look? Here  are the steps to get it done. I’m headed over to my bathroom right now to try it out. Stay bella!

  1. Make a side part and take three inches of the hair closest to the front and pin to the side.
  2. Take another three inches from the crown of the head, right behind the section of hair you just marked off and pin that to the side as well.
  3. You should be left with two sections of hair on both sides of your head.
  4. Take the hair from the right section, and twist hair into a low ponytail, you should go from your temple to the nape of your neck.
  5. Take the hair from the left section, and do the same but make sure you keep image002hair on an angle.
  6. You should be left with 2 “rolls” on each side of you head.
  7. With the hair in the low ponytail, you should coil pieces together and allow them to fold into each other, just use pins to hold hair in place.
  8. Take the top section from the crown of your head and twist that piece loosely like a rope and pin it to your head.
  9. Take the last section of hair and fold the hair into the rolls with your finger and pin all loose pieces with your finger.

Fashion Week Hair Secrets Revealed

image003 A chic bun is a great style for any hair type, any event and any outfit.  The only issue is keeping the bun to stay put.

Celebrity hair stylist, Philip Pelusi and his Tela design team created chic little chignons for Caroline Seikaly’s Mercedes Benz fashion week presentation at Tela Design Studios.

The secret, according to Philip Pelusi, is to spray the length of your hair/ponytail with holding spray before twisting your hair into bun.  The hairspray gives texture to the strands, allowing them to be easily manipulated.  Most people spray the bun after, when they are already have the hair pinned and set, this is a much less affective method in keeping the hair to stay in place.

It’s a neat little trick to get professional results at home! Stay bella!

Is it true blondes have more fun?

blonde

About two months ago I decided to become a blonde. And for me, it’s a HUGE deal! I’ve dyed my hair almost every other color in the hair dye spectrum except blonde or chele as we say in Nicaragua. I figure “you only live life once so why not live it as a blonde?”

The transformation has been somewhat drastic. I’ve started out with progressive hair lighting and highlights. I’ve also had to use color on my eyebrows so that the change blends in. To make this more interesting, I recently started a new phase of my life with the new hair- hmm, so is it true that blondes are treated differently?

How many of you have gone blonde? Was it worth it? Would you go back to being blonde?

P.S. And Jai was right, the people at L’Oreal know what they’re doing; Feria really does offer the best colors!

How can I get my hair like Candi in Las Tontas?

March 3, 2009 by Jai

Are you asking yourself this question? Las Tontas No Van Al Cielo is a popular telenovela on Univision. Candi’s hair is just as popular and I am here to help you out! Now I’m going to assume one thing: Your hair is long. If it’s not then you need to go get extensions chica!

Tools needed: 2″ Hair Iron, Heat Activated Flexible Hair SprayRat Tail Comb

First: Start by washing your hair. If it’s extremely curly like mine or even wavy you’re going to have to blow dry it with a round brush. An alternative is to go the old school way and get rolos. :) But your hair should be dried all the way through.

Next, while you’re warming up your 2″ Hair Iron, use the Rat Tail Comb to  tease the crown of your hair before you divide the hair into sections. Take a section of hair at a time (two inches wide) and wind the hair iron around it. Keep the iron parallel to your face, the way you want your curls to fall. Don’t wind any higher than your ears you want to keep that body at the crown. While the hair is curled around the iron, Use the Heat Activated Flexible Hair Spray and lightly spray it.

Repeat this for each section of hair. Use the Rat Tail Comb to lightly pull the curls apart if you wish. Use the tail part so not to damage the curl. Lightly spray your whole head. It’s important that you get the Flexible Hair Spray because you don’t want your hair to be crunchy. That is not sexy! The Heat Activation helps protect your hair and it is made to work with things like the hair iron and other curling irons.

Cheat! You can cheat on the crown at the body by getting yourself one of those Thinny Hair Holders that you see on TV. I’ve personally never tried it but it states it can give you more volume at the crown.

And there’s your Candi hairstyle! Want some more tips? Send me an email at jai(at)mamistimeout(dot) com with a picture of your favorite actress and I will give you the steps to recreate it! Or you could always leave a comment!

Steal Anne Hathaway’s Straight Hair!

January 15, 2009 by Jai

annh I personally like my hair with a bit of wave even though it’s naturally curly. But for you chicas that love that pin straight hair look here’s how to get Anne Hathaway’s Golden Globe’s look:

It’s all about the products you use. Anne uses Ted Gibson’s hair straightener and hair sheets.

Ted Gibson Hair Sheets- Features the exclusive Ted Gibson complex of silk amino acids, vitamins A, B5 and E, wild orchid extract, hydrolyzed collagen (marine), silicone compounds, UV absorber and natural lavender oil that eliminates the look of dry ends with a non-greasy feel  $25

This also sounds like it smells great. I love the smell of lavender. The hair straightener is a bit pricey at $275 a pop. Ted Gibson Hair Straightener-the Ted Gibson professional hair straightener does more than just create pin straight hair. It can be used from wet to dry and it can also be used to create bouncy curls. $275. Here are images of both products:

iron tedg

You can purchase these at Ted Gibson Beauty. So what is the texture of your hair? Is it curly, straight or something in between? Do you prefer your hair stick straight or curly (or something in between!). My answer: My hair is super curly but I prefer it straight with some nice wave most of the time. I like bounce! :) But I do wear it curly once in a while to give it a break from all that heat damage.

One more question: Did you like Anne Hathaway’s look?
