Product Review: Brushlab Ceramic Hair Brush

I have received this product for review from International Beauty Products. Mami’s Time Out does not get compensated in any way for this review. you can always count on an honest review from Mami’s Time Out.

brushlab I have previously received–and loved–the Thermal Brush from Brushlab. It has become my favorite brush and I use it constantly to blow dry my hair. The brush I have recently received, the Ceramic Hair Brush is a good brush, but not my absolute favorite. At only 1.75 inches round, this brush is better for someone who has shorter, thinner hair than me. It can be used for someone with longer thicker hair, but I wouldn’t recommend it to someone who is a newbie at blow drying hair. Longer hair can easily get tangled in this smaller brush.

This brush definitely delivers at drying hair quickly and effectively. This is good for us thicker, longer haired ladies who may want a wave to their hair while drying. Also, the rat tail is great for parting sections to dry. At $11.98 it’s a steal!

So I do definitely recommend this brush to those thinner or shorter haired chicas out there. The longer hair chicas can benefit more from that Thermal Brush. Longer haired chicas can also purchase this brush, but it can definitely tangle if you are not a pro at working it. You can purchase this at BrushLab or Ulta.

Olive Oil and Mayo for Dry Hair

January 28, 2010 by Jai

olive Did you read that right? Yup sometimes you can just look in your kitchen to find what you need to help you tackle that dry hair. Olive Oil and mayo is an excellent moisturizing treatment for your hair and scalp. Here are some tricks from stylists Josh Rosebrook and Robear Landeros at LA Based salon The Parlour on 3rd.

How to make an Olive Oil moisturizing treatment.

Take 1/4 cup olive oil and pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds.

Part your hair into four sections and apply the warm olive oil to your scalp section by section. Make sure to work the olive oil from the scalp to the ends of your hair.

Put a plastic cap on your hair and let the olive oil work its magic for 30 minutes.

Remove the cap. Shampoo condition and style your hair as usual.

How to make a Healthy Hair Mask

For best results, stick with an organic brand of mayo. Place a plastic bag over your hair after you apply. Leavie it on for 30 minutes. If you don’t mind smelling like a ham sandwich, the results are worth it!

New Hair Trend: Get 80’s Hair

Remember hair in the 80’s? Lost of teasing and hairspraying to acheive that big look. If you want the big volume without that over the top 80’s look here are some tips from celebrity hairstylist Philip Pelusi who is well knows for his Volumetric haircutting techinque.

teased

  • Use a volumizing conditioner and shampoo: Volumizing products are formulated not to weigh hair down. Be careful to apply conditioner only to ends.
  • Give Your Roots a Boost: Apply a root lifter bfore blowdrying, from midshaft to root (try Mod di Phy Define oof Lift Volumize Spray)
  • Blow dry for “oomph”: Lift sectioins of hair toward the sky as you blow-dry, driecting hot air toward your scalp.
  • Don’t blow-dry upside-down: To kep volume moderized, do not flip your head over.Back-Brush instead of tease: Instead of teasing your tresses iwth a comb, you se a flat-backed brush which will damage your hair less.
  • Mist Hairspray: Heavy hairspray is more likely to weigh hair down instead of give it volume. Sprit z hairspray in to the air and walk through it (try Mod di Phy Fluid Shaping and Finishing Spray)
I kind of like this look it’s still teased but in moderation.

Product Review: Organix Shampoo and Conditioner

This product was received for review by a Public Relations company. Mami’s Time Out has in no way been compensated for its review. You can always count on an honest review from Mami’s Time Out.

Ilavender recently had the chance to review Organix Lavender Soymilk Shampoo and Conditioner as well as coconut milk leave in treatment. Since I’m always on the lookout for products that can help me restore my hair to its original luster I thought this was a good fit for me. From the website:

Fortifying Lavender Soymilk Shampoo & Conditioner
An irresistible infusion of soothing lavender, rich in essential oils to nourish your hair follicles while ultra whipped soymilk proteins instantly fortifies, heals and conditions, along with vitamins and marigold oil to moisturize your tresses, leaving hair strengthened, silky, and frizz-free. This fortifying blend of organic lavender with ultra whipped soymilk proteins and marigold oil provides for a totally indulgent experience for longer stronger hair.

I definitely could use this! When it said Frizz Free I was in! I have reviewed other frizz fighting products before which work well but Organix is a bit more pocket and purse friendly at only $6.99. You can also find it in local drugstores as well as Amazon.com. It smells absolutely divine, the only thing is that the shampoo has a weird type of texture close to a gel. Once you rub it between your hands with some water you’re good. The bottle is also eco-friendly.
I must say that even a few days after using the shampoo my hair looks very cute! And I realized this morning (washed and blow dried it about two days ago) that I haven’t used any extra smoothing serums or frizz free products! Hopefully this will make my blow out last longer due to no heavy product buildup! You can get Organix Shampoo Lavender Soy Milk for only $6.49 at Amazon.

I also tried the Nourishing Coconut Milk Instant Repair Treatment. From the website:

Nourishing Coconut Milk Instant Repair Treatment
Organix Coconut Milk Instant Repair Treatment is a totally indulgent unique blend of organic weightless coconut oil, silk and keratin proteins formulated to repair and prevent the effects of damage do to biological, environmental and mechanical aging while restoring vibrance and bounce.

This was another great product, it smelled so good! Even today a few days later, I can still smell the Lavender and Coconut in my hair! Loves! Definitely a must buy!

How to Style Your Hair for a Hat

December 9, 2009 by Jai

Hats are the must have accessory for the fall and winter months.
But it is not always so easy to look good in a hat–here is the secret it is all about the hair.
Celebrity hairstylist, Philip Pelusi reveals how to make your hair look great under the most common hat styles of the season.
fedora
Hat Style:
Fedora
Hair Style: Contrast the angles of the hat with loose feminine waves.
Why This Works: Loose feminine waves are a great way to wear your hair under a Fedora.  This type of hat has very sharp “menswear” angles.  This is off-set by the softer hairstyle.
How To Achieve This Look:  This type of hair style works best on medium to longer length hair.  If hair has a natural wave, simply apply a curl enhancing products like P2® by Philip Pelusi® ReCurl to boost waves and BeachComber to add texture and let hair dry or dry with a diffuser attachment on your blow dyer.  If hair is straight, use a big barrel curling iron to add curls, some facing towards and some facing away from the face.
Hat Style: Newsboy cap
Hair Style: Create ballerina-esque bun at the nape of the neck.
Why This Works: Wearing a ballerina-esque bun at the nape is perfect combination with this tomboyish type Newsboy cap look.  Also the Newsboy cap is supposed to be worn low on the forehead and this tends to cover most of the entire forehead.  Wearing a ballerina bun pulls the hair back off the face opening to face up.
How To Achieve This Look:   Part hair in the center and smooth hair back into a low ponytail at the middle of the nape.  Use a hair smoothing bore bristle brush and a hair smoothing product like Tela® Beauty Organics Composure.  Apply product to the ponytail also and brush smooth.  Twist ponytail in one direction and wind around ponytail and secure with a few hair pins.  Put on Newsboy and you are ready to go.
hat
Hat Style: Beret
Hair Style: Tuck the hair back into a side pony so that soft strands peek out.
Why This Works: A side swept ponytail is a perfect way to wear your hair under a Beret.  A Beret has a French romantic look and this feminine ponytail really compliments that.  Tuck the hair back into a side pony so that soft strands peek out.
How To Achieve This Look: This look works best with straight or smooth hair.  Create a side part and use a bore bristle paddle brush and a hair smoothing product like Tela® Beauty Organics Encore and brush into a low side ponytail at the nape on the opposite side of the part.  Secure ponytail and put on Beret.  The back of the Beret should slouch to the opposite side of the ponytail.
Hat Style: Shearling hat
Hair Style: Pull the hair half-way back, then unclip when the hat comes off to get the hair’s bounce back.
Why This Works: Shearling hats are beautiful and warm but they often crush the hair.  A hair half-way up look is a great idea to make the hair look great while the hat is on and preserve the hair for when the hat comes off.
How To Achieve This Look: Style hair as usual and then apply a product that can act as a dry hair setting lotion like P2® by Philip Pelusi® Increase. Then divide hair in half from ear to ear and twist up the crown of the head and secure with a clip.  This will work as a dry set.  Once you take the hat off and remove clip, toss to separate hair and revive hair with a hair refreshing product like as P2® by Philip Pelusi® RefresHair®.

Brushlab-Thermal-Round-Barrel-Hair-Brush-63211 This brush is a must-have for every curly haired chica that loves to blow dry their hair! At only $12.98, this brush helps reduce frizz. It’s round and aerated so air can flow right through the brush. The barrel is also ceramic which heats up with the blow dryer. It cuts the time down in half…literally! It’s very light weight and great to use but I did get burned once or twice when my finger slipped on the barrel. Nothing too crazy but it definitely heats up! It’s 2.25" around and dried my hair in about 20 minutes compared to the usual 40! Not only that, but my hair needed minimal shining product afterwards, it left it smooth and silky! The secret to a professional style is professional tools. This one is definitely one you need to make it look like you just stepped out of the salon! You can find these and other brushes at a great price at Brush Love.

Brushlab-Pink-Mirror-Brush-Combo-Hair-Brush-61161 This brush is another great quality brush from brush love. It’s a hot pink brush with a mirror in the back. I think this brush is pretty handy for touch ups during the day. It has the nylon ball-tipped bristles that you can use for styling or detangling. And at $9.98 it’s a great price! The only thing I wish it was a bit smaller.  Unless you carry around a big bag, this is a not a travel sized brush. It would work fine in an overnight bag or a book bag though. Or for your teen daughter or niece in school it would be perfect. The color is cute and it will work in a locker or book bag. It would also be great for the office. Great gift for $9.98 and again you can include some sample sized hair products or lotion to make a cute gift set. You also get a free gift with every purchase at brush love so what’s not to love?

Brushlab-pronto-ionic-hair-brush-33451 One of the things I hate most about winter (besides the snow) is how static-y my hair gets. I hate applying layer after layer of products because then my hair gets greasy. So when I got the opportunity to review this brush I was ecstatic! The little hairs that were standing up towards the top of my head are gone. You can also use this Ionic hair brush to detangle your hair if it’s dry. This brush is static resistant and creates negative ions for smoother, healthier hair. I’ve been using it twice a day: once in the morning before I use the straight iron, and again at night before putting my hair in a bun. My hair looks like normal again you can’t even tell I’ve battling static the past few weeks! If you want your own Ionic Hair Brush it’s only $8.98 at the Brush Love website. This would be great with your favorite product samples for that special someone who loves beauty and hair products in your life!

Also, Brush Love has a new survey where five lucky winners can get a free ING digital hair Iron ($159.99 retail value). I have one and it’s lovely! Fill out the survey for a chance to win!

Product Review: The All Nighter Styling Powder

This product was received for review by A Beautiful Life, owner of The All Nighter Styling Powder. Mami’s Time Out has not been compensated for this review. You can always count on an honest product review by Mami’s Time Out.

allnighterhi_rescopy Ok so let’s be honest, chicas. Have you ever been guilty of trying to stretch out that great blow out a day or so more by using baby powder? I have and it’s such a hassle because you want to make sure your hair doesn’t take on that white or gray cast while still getting that extra oil out of your scalp. So, when I received this product it was almost an Aha! moment where I wished I would have thought of it myself. This product comes in all hair colors like black, honey blonde, brown/brunette, golden blonde, redhead and a platinum/neutral color. It’s also finger friendly and gently scented with essence of tangerine to give your hair a freshness boost.

I tried this on my own hair and might have gotten a bit carried away. You only need a bit or your hair feels too dry. I also have a friend with very oily scalp who tried it and loved it. I honestly let her have it since she needed it more than I did!

You do have to be careful because it can stain your clothes. Retailing for $18, this is the perfect product to keep your blowout in place and take away that excess oil. Mami’s Tip: After applying this product, you can also put a cotton bandana on overnight to help your style last a bit longer.

This product is available online and can be the perfect stocking stuffer!
