How to Update your Old Fridge!

I haven’t done a DIY in a while! And I’ve always wanted to add some chalkboard paint to my kitchen, whether it was a wall or an appliance. I wanted to update the old fridge at the old house with chalkboard paint but I never got around to doing it. In this house, we ended up with a bigger fridge when we purchased the home, but it was an older almond colored fridge. I couldn’t wait to paint the fridge with chalkboard paint. I first saw chalkboard paint while watching a Nickelodeon show with the kids. Did you guys ever watch Good Luck Charlie? That kitchen had a massive fridge with chalkboard paint on the doors.

Believe it or not, I get a lot of inspiration on how to decorate my home from Nickelodeon family shows. Some of the decorating is over the top especially with color, but I do get inspiration from the fun and family friendly spaces, which is what I want my home to look like. I mean, check out those blue dining room chairs!!! I love it!

I deep cleaned the fridge inside and out when we moved in, so it was ready for a coat of chalkboard paint. I did three coats of paint using a roller brush and did touch ups with a foam brush. I recommend that you don’t paint when it’s too hot or too cold. It was a really hot day here about 90 degrees and I still tackled this painting job (with no AC!!). I’m glad that the second and third coats went on ok.

The kids will be doodling on one side of the fridge and I will be posting menus and facts on the other side of the fridge. We will see how this works but so far I love it. And I have quite a bit of paint left and wonder what else I can do with it. I’m going to hold on to it since I noticed some of it scraped off on the side my kids are writing on. The menu is really helpful on answering the never ending “what’s for dinner” question and I’m changing the quotes on it weekly. Right now the quote, by Michael Jordan, says:

“I can accept failure, but I can’t accept not trying.”

It’s perfect that it’s on the fridge, it has reminded my 9 year old multiple times about the importance of trying. He doesn’t try for fear of failure. And he loves sports so a quote like this from Michael Jordan will probably stay longer than a week!

Anyway, I purchased a quart of chalkboard paint from Walmart for less than $10! A little goes a long way! But I am keeping an eye on it to see if there’s a need for touch ups. I don’t know if I should have used a primer or not, but I guess we will have to wait it out and see!

Have you used chalkboard paint at all? Or have you tried updating your fridge?
