business-dress-2 Welcome to Hired or Fired Fashion Friday, where today we’re getting into finding the appropriate interview attire. Going on an interview is nerve wrecking, the right outfit will give you the confidence to help nail the position and the side effect is you are going to do it with style!
We have all had bad experiences with job interviews! But, if you are looking right and are backing that up with proper talk then you got it all in the bag.
WHAT NOT TO WEAR ON AN INTERVIEW:
First and foremost ghetto is out of the picture. When I say ” Ghetto” I mean door knockers, big up-do’s ,extremely bright colors, and all that jewelry leave to Mr.T cause boy oh boy ” I pity the fool who wears that jewelry”. Next, NO BRIGHT COLORS, NONE! That clubbing shirt or dress, stop don’t even do it ! Platform heels ? Why would you ? A hat umm, no, just not going to happen. Finally, make up yes it’s fine. Unless interviewing for the next Joker position, please keep the makeup toned and natural. First impressions count and you sure don’t want it to be a bad one!
WHAT TO WEAR TO AN INTERVIEW:
When going on an interview you should feel comfortable with what you are wearing. If don’t own that suit doesn’t mean you can’t put it together. Black slacks are found everywhere pick a pair up or if you own one then perfect. Black pants is just a basic in your work closet. Skirts are okay as long a they are not 4inches above the knee. Blazers, you don’t have to necessarily have one you can always wear a cardigan or V-neck sweater, 3/4 sweater or turtle neck.
As for Blouses ,they should always fit the bust not make it look like that’s your kid sisters blouse. Colors pastels and natural’s always do the trick.
When it comes to hair, nothing wild please! Slick back is perfect because it shows your face as well as your beauty! Having it down it also fine.
Shoes: MY FAVE! a women should always own a good pair of black flats or heels. My opinion, heels it makes you look taller ,thinner more approachable and intimidating. Interviewer want to see that you could put yourself together.
MY TOUCH IS ACCESSORIES ! never over do it.You can wear your lucky charm luck you will need. But pearls make everything look ten times better. Wearing pearl earrings or necklace.I personally nailed my Job because of my $6 pearls.I was running late and my outfit looked boring but the pearls did the trick.
That’s this week brief tips on what to wear to an I interview and What not to wear to an interview.Of course this may all vary within the job criteria you are going for.Normally basic is covered everywhere .

Have a great labor day weekend!

As I go on my thirty day shopping freeze, Gee covers her shopping tendencies in today’s post! I am all about a few of these stores and must say I have the Forever 21 app on my iTouch. That I can’t use for at least 30 days. Keep your fingers crossed! Ok enough about me, let’s here about Gee!

foreverThis week on Fashion Friday we will be covering my top 5 stores, and where to get the most bang for you buck. Now, I did say we’d be using our Metro Cards this week, so let’s get to it!

First Stop Forever 21 : I’ve got to say that that this store has surprised me throughout the years. You can find one in all the five boros in NYC as well as outside of NYC, they now carry Men’s and Children’sattire. What more can you ask for?  Forever21 always has affordable jeans, tees, dresses, sock, accessories, inmate wear, shoes, hats, scarf’s, unisex glasses you name they probably have it. Now this store is my top 5 store that MommaGiee shops in.  If you can’t reach the store you can always do your shopping online, and they also have a clothing line for the curvy and more to love momma’s. IPhone now offers a Forever21 APP.

Mami’s Note: Love this store too and it now carries maternity online. I advise not to buy pants online before trying them at the store. But the tops and accessories are to die for!!

Next Stop Century 21. This store isn’t that easy to reach since its only in the New York area and theirs only a certain location of them in New York at that. Century’s is more of a bargain store. To be honesta they say it’s “fashion worth fighting for”. They also have great prices for high priced items. They have international wear, kids dept, men’s dept , house dept, fragrance dept as well  and nothing but less they have a large selection for shoes for all ages. So if you in the New York area might want to check out Century 21. For store listing check out the site.

This stop consists of several stores within one block: Broadway Nassau (financial district)

This area I have got to be honest Is my favorite. They have cute boutiques such as Dor la’dor, which has a great shoe collection for less, purses and accessories. I just love this store, and they always have the latest must have looks. Just the scenery of the store makes me want to shop, but if that’s not enough they also offer frequent buyers card. You can be find them on Facebook. Be sure to mention that Gina sent you.

Within ten feet is DeJaneiro which offers an affordable work attire of some last minutes things like bra’s, underwear, PJ’s also large selection of cami’s and tights (leggings) this store is pretty reliable just in case of a wardrobe malfunction. DeJaneiro also has a shoe store right across the street where you can always find cute shoes for less.

And last but not least there is Know Style this store is more of my night life store. They sure can help you find your night life outfit. And if you need some Gotti jewelry they sure can hook you up.

So that was my list of top 5 stores Now go check them out! Shopping is suppose to fun not drastic CAUTION IT CAN BE ADDICTING! stay tuned for next week’s post the first impression is key .So I’ll be helping you put your interview outfit together.

Hearst’s REDBOOK has launched its first application for the iPhone called One Stop Shop.
The One Stop Shop app contains REDBOOK editor’s picks of the hottest fashion, beauty and home buys, as well as styling tips, decorating advice and recipe ideas.
You can download the One Stop Shop app today for free on iTunes. And for those of us that have the iTouch it may work with that as well. You already know, fashion beauty home buys and a free app! I’m all over that! If I can only get my iTouch to work in my home would be a different story…..

The Bamboo earring remixed!

Do you remember bamboo earrings? These earrings take me back to the 80′s when I was growing up in Brooklyn. Designer Seville Michelle Anastos has remixed by wrapping it in leather. I kind of like it! If you’re the kind that cares if celebs have worn this design….Singer Ciara was just spotted sporting the earrings in LA and P Diddy’s new band Dirty Money wore the earrings at the recent BET Awards performance. Alicia Keys is currently wearing her designs on her world tour.

I do think it’s a cool take on the classic bamboo earrings and it comes in different colors. It’s funny I remember blogging about the bamboo earrings a few years ago.

The earrings were just picked up by the Patricia Field store in New York City and are available
online at www.sevillemichelleanastos.com

So what do you think about these earrings?

Fashion Friday: Glamour Part II

Gina is back this week for Fashion Friday (the thirteenth!!) helping us finishing up the huge makeover that is our closet! Take note on what needs to be done in order to clean up that mess in there! Here’s to looking fab! Have a great weekend ladies!

Not everything in a person’s wardrobe should be considered disposable with the seasons. With a little imagination, some cosmetic changes such as a dash of paint, an embroidered motif or an altered hemline can transform a dress. So for this week’s event make sure you drop the wine (using sharp objects while under the influence is not recommended).

Get out those scissors! Shortening hemlines, taking sleeves off a dress and cutting off lapels updates tired old clothes. Just remember, once it’s gone, it’s gone so cut conservatively. Also remember new buttons can make a huge difference for little money and you can do it yourself! Not only that adding fur to your old jacket can spice that look up.

Finding your outfits can actually be at your reach. What I normally do is follow the TV shows and magazines. You see the thing with me is that I’m more of a visual person, so the picture stays formatted in my head. But for those that aren’t too well with memory you can purchase a cork board at Target, Walmart,or Lot Less and if that’s not accessible you can always get a dry erase board were you can add magnets to the frame. If you really don’t want to spend money on a cork board,or dry erase board you can use the inside of your closet door and good old fashion tape. What you do is cut out pics of the outfits or particular styles you like, download or print them from your computer or take a picture . Place them on your board or the back of the door. The  photo graph purpose is to give you a idea of what can be done with some pieces that may already be  in your closet.

Re-purposing those “Regulars”can get emotional. Why ? Because us women don’t like letting things go and now is the time to. So start with your regular pile.Take those work clothes aside and your usual wear aside. Remember this doesn’t have to always be your usual .You can always do all of the above to them .Taking this pile as I done myself and add items to a shirt ,jacket or even pants can make it a whole new outfit.

Furthermore, your “Maybe pile” this can get hard because it’s do” I keep you” or “do I give you away”? In this case what do I do with you? Well here’s what you can do those old jeans you you can take all your high-water jeans that have shrunk ( remember the flood is over ) and cut them into Sutherland shorts, capris or if they no longer fit as in baggy you can turn them into boyfriend jeans where there isn’t any cutting involved. In this case only folding. That look can be worn in the summer with sandals and in the winter with boots. Now for all those unwanted jeans you can cut the lengths using a blade make small cuts and stretch them so they look torn or add patches. Then there you go you covered your jean subject.

WHAT WAS I THINKING ? yeah that pile let’s play dress up! Now this again is the outfits you might of bought out of pressure. This can get dirty so take precaution. Look at them real good and think hmmm what will I do with you ? Now if they are dresses that you don’t see yourself wearing again then turn them around and turn it into a blouse. This may contain a belt or a snip here or there. If it was a pair of jeans we already covered what can be done with them. Also if it’s an item you can’t or don’t see yourself  repurposing  then make a handbag out of it, a scarf or a hat. Hey you never know!

Now that we’ve tamed that beastly closet, let’s relax and get ready to take it to the streets! Where I will be  releasing  my sources of were to find the bargains. Hope you have an unlimited metro card, since we’re going to be using it!

Fashion Friday! Glamour Within Your Closet

July 30, 2010 by Jai

In the first of many fashion Fridays, Gina teaches us about the first step in creating a fabulous closet!

messy room Welcome to the Fashion Friday’s series, where the focus is on getting our wardrobe looking right.  While we’ve been going through a heat wave here in The Big Apple lately, and you may not be thinking about winter.  But rest assured the cold weather will soon be upon us.  So I’ll be focusing on your winter wardrobe.  What better way to start on the road to glamorous than to get started with your closet.  Sorry, if you thought we were going to hit the streets, but honestly, we have to put your closet on a speed diet, how else are we going to know what exactly you need to get your closet into glamour mode?  Plus you may have a few hidden gems in there already, better finding them now before the shopping begins.  Clothes, Bags, and Shoes, Oh My, follow the wonderful glamour road!

Glamour, is not about being skinny but dressing for your body type!  So ladies be honest with yourself.  If you are no longer the size 4 your were in high school don’t worry, since you no longer live at home either.  You have a child a family and responsibilities.  Ladies, knowing your body type will make creating your own style easier, when we get to shopping.  Honesty, will pay four times over when we’re done with your wardrobe!

Let’s get to it!  Let’s clean out the closet.  First things first lets grab a bottle, Red or White wine, I’m more of a Merlot, but it’s all up to you.  Then put on some music, this also, is up to you!  The next one is by far the easiest thing and fastest thing to do.  Take everything out.  Yes everything must be removed from the closet.  Don’t take time to reminisce, you’ll get nothing done, and when you look at the time it’ll be bed time.  When your done you should see the floor and the back of your closet.  This should take about all but two or three sips of wine at the most.

Once you have your great big pile of clothing comes the most difficult thing, it can and may be a little emotional.  For the sake of this post, we’ll blame the emotions on the wine!  You’re going to sort that one big pile into three smaller piles.

• Regulars- stuff you know you’ll wear, and also suit your body type this is were honesty will help you. Just because you like it doesn’t mean it flatters you. Like that three sizes to big sweats, or those shirts that look like kitchen rags. Nope, it  doesn’t look good “homey”. Yes, its comfy, but it’s got to go.
• Never again- no this is not stuff that’s going into the trash straight away, but may end up there!  This is stuff you bought on impulse and have never worn, or was a gift, or may you did where once or twice.  Some of it just needs love( more on that later).
• Maybe- this is stuff that your not honestly sure about, some times you like it other times as soon as you see you toss it back into the closet.

Creating these three piles will require about two glasses of wine to complete.  Remember its wine no gulping, wine is to be enjoyed.  Now lets go back to the honesty, it is very important that you look at each piece and figure out if it goes with the style you are trying to create. You may think the regulars pile might go straight away back into the closest, but that is not so.
When sorting the Regulars, make sure they are not regular boo boo’s. We need for you to let go of those items that made it into your regulars, but do not belong. Yes, I know it isn’t easy but we need to learn, to stop being attached to those items, this is where we blame the emo’s on the wine. This is why a lot of us women have so much crap!
Never again pile, yeah the impulse made you get the shirt ,dress or pants but that doesn’t necessarily  mean it’s trash. Remember the key here is to re-purpose and create something new that can be part of your Regular wear.  The re-purposing is something that we take on next week.
The maybe pile, this one will require that you fill your glass before starting!  This should be where you use your imagination.  Listen we have children that means we have an imagination if not we wouldn’t think like our kids think.  Here, you decide whether if it still fits ,are you finally going to put this to use,or can you also re-purpose this ?
I know many get scared but re-purposing is really not that hard. Next week I’ll will be giving you ideas on how to re-purpose, and how with a little imagination, some of those maybe’s and  never again can become some of your new personal favorites.  Will also tackle the Jekyll and Hyde closet syndrome!

bracelet This company has taken the pen pal thing to the 21st century. I love it this very cool idea! Basically you purchase this cool bracelet for only $10 and register the code on the site. Then they unite you with a military personnel overseas that has the matching bracelet. You can get an idea of how life for an American soldier overseas is like while they keep in touch with how we are currently living in the US. Also, 25% of the proceeds go to the American Freedom Foundation to support our veterans. And the bracelet is very cute. So here are the steps.

To join the initiative:

· Buy a bracelet for $10 at http://bff.tv

· Register the unique engraved number found on your bracelet

· A bracelet with an identical engraved number will be sent to your new “best armed forces friend”

· Unite via the online community

Many Latino celebrities including America Ferrera are joining in the cause! Here’s a bonus pic…

New Writer and Fashion Fridays!

I’m always on the lookout for writers so if you want to contribute something contact me! I’m excited to introduce Gina for Fashion Fridays a new column on Mami’s Time Out. Read a bit and get to know her! Enjoy!

Hey, I am Gina, a full time mom (of a precious and, brilliant 4year old daughter), if that’s not enough I’m also a full-time student and, full time employee. You can find me on twitter @mommaGiee (I’m still learning how to use twitter), which is the name my daughter gave me.

I have an intense passionate interest in fashion, and it dates from my early years.   From the age of five, I remember,I used to prance around my parents’ home in princess clothing and I was always designing clothes, hair, and other accessories for my vast Barbie Doll collection. As I grew older this obsession grew and now this passionate love of beauty and fashion has become my lifetime goal, which I am currently committed to transforming into a prominent career.

Being a mother is a beautiful experience, so why not feel it and look it without going over budget! I find as a hot Mami, I’ve had to rethink the way I stock my closet.  No longer am I able to just go out and spend without thinking of my little bundle of joy.  What fashionista would be caught with a half empty closet? None, that’s right!  So I’ve had to make adjustments, I’ve had to find ways to look like a million bucks with out spending a million bucks.  I live in the Big Apple after all!

So hang out with me every Friday  for Fashion Friday, I’ll be talking about:

● finding the bargains

● simple ways to update your closet without having to take a second job or finding a chulo.

● extending your work clothes into the evening and vice versa.  Nothing sucks than having two separate closets, since when one is being used the other isn’t, and that’s just a waste.

● stepping up your accessories, since we all know they can make or break your whole look.

So for all my hot and sexy mami’s we’re going to try a double your closet, and for the new mami’s concerned about your wardrobe, I’m going to help you maintain that sexy.Just because we’re mother’s doesn’t mean sexy stops!
